Post office seeking to increase its market share in the financial services sector

A collaborative venture with a United States-based cash transfer entity and a new local money transfer service are just two of the initiatives that the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) has taken in recent years in an effort to “re-invent” itself, broaden the base of its revenue and enhance its competitiveness in the financial services sector.

Deputy Post Master General Mayglen Adams is acutely aware of the antiquated image of the local postal service and makes no secret of her support for the changes that are taking place.

Two months ago the Corporation joined two local commercial banks in introducing an “outbound” money transfer service. The service, which is being run in collaboration with Post Cash, a United States-based service allows users to deposit up to USD 2,500 on their Post Cash cards and to have those amounts available to them for business transactions overseas. The facility is valid for both direct cash purchases abroad as well as on-line shopping.

“The advantage of the new “outbound” Post Cash Service compared with similar services currently being offered is that card holders are not required to spend all their cash at the same time. Balances can be held on the card,” Ms. Adams told Stabroek Business.

The new outbound Post Cash Service comes just over a year after the GPOC introduced its inbound money transfer service but several months after the introduction of similar services by Republic Bank and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry. And according to the Deputy Post Master General the fact that both services were not introduced simultaneously may have allowed the Corporation’s “competitors” to get ahead of the GPOC in implementing outbound services. She feels that both services ought to have been implemented simultaneously.

TNT delivers hope for children in Africa

Employees at TNT have delivered a cash boost to feed and educate 1200 malnourished children in Tanzania for a year.

Entitled ‘Fight Hunger Week,’ the initiative saw thousands of TNT employees in the UK hold a fun-packed range of activities to raise more than GBP 30,000 for the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP).

The money raised by TNT will be channelled into the WFP’s School Feeding Programme whereby children in developing countries are encouraged to attend school and receive a free nourishing meal. All the donations from TNT Express Services in the UK & Ireland will go to provide much-needed nutrition and education for youngsters in Tanzania.

Stuart Stobie, Divisional Managing Director, TNT Express Services UK said: “It costs just 7p per day to feed and educate a child in Tanzania or GBP 25 a year. The initiative is part of an ongoing partnership that has already seen TNT in the UK generate more than GBP 260,000 to support the excellent work undertaken by the WFP.”

More than 50 TNT Express Services depots and offices combined their efforts as part of the specially designated week with a bewildering array of fund-raising activities from fancy dress days, chest waxings, depot beauty salons, health checks, running and rowing challenges, cake baking, noodle-eating, managers in stocks, auctions, raffles and car valeting, to name but a few.

Post boxes for villas underway

Q-POST has initiated the steps for its much-awaited scheme of post boxes in villa compounds and flat complexes, inquiries found.

An official of the post boxes department said yesterday that in response to the advertisement carried by Q-Post some time ago, owners of some villa compounds had responded to express their willingness to avail of the scheme.

Mohamed Hamad Rashdan, head of subscribers’ boxes of Q-Post, said that the department was still receiving a number of requests from potential customers.

Under the scheme, in the first year a customer has to pay QR700 for installation of a post box at his residence. The amount included the installation charges of QR200 of the box.

However, from the second year, the customer needs to pay QR500, said Rashdan.

As part of the arrangement, customers would also be provided a common post box in a villa compound or a flat complex for the outward delivery of postal articles.

The Q-Post official said that those staying in apartments could also have boxes installed outside their flat. For them also the tariffs would be the same.

Asked if the facility would be extended to other areas, the official said the new scheme would be introduced all over Qatar.

The official said the corporation had the manpower and vehicles to make delivery of postal articles anywhere in the country.

The official said the new arrangement will soon come into being in some compounds in Doha.

North Star Network launched

North Star Network aims to establish a database of’couriers’ from sales reps to students to deliver items all over the country at a rate of 56p per mile.

Founder David Gillooley said a typical example would mean someone travelling by train to London from Liverpool could earn pounds 107 from a journey that was being made anyway.

The 44-year-old from Aigburth who gave up a career as an architectural designer to set up his www.northstar-network.co.uk website in the city’s Rumford Court said his venture provides the opportunity for people to earn extra cash while doing almost nothing.

“We have a growing network of people from all walks of life. It’s free to join and we charge 50% less for same day deliveries – a massive saving.”

Would be ‘couriers’ register their details for free and can be asked to deliver items, mainly hand held goods, on behalf of North Star’s clients who need fast, guaranteed deliveries.

Goods can be handed over at a prearranged location, from a supermarket store lobby or coffee shop, even a service station.

He said his inspiration for setting up the website came from America where, for many years, students or travellers looking for cheap ways to move across the US solved the problem by driving vehicles to specific locations for owners who were moving there.

The business was formed towards the end of 2006 and Mr Gilloolley said it is growing in popularity: “We are getting loads of registrations. We’re up to 250 at the moment from as far north as Aberdeen to Plymouth on the south coast.
