German military mail service celebrates its 15th anniversary

The German armed forces Bundeswehr and Deutsche Post have marked the 15-year anniversary of Feldpost, the German military mail service, at a celebratory event. For one-and-a-half decades Deutsche Post has been providing the link between Bundeswehr soldiers serving overseas and home. Currently it is delivering letters, packages, and parcels from home to some 8,000 soldiers serving in Bosnia Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Georgia and Uzbekistan.

The collaboration between Deutsche Post and the Bundeswehr began in 1955, the year in which the Bundeswehr was established. The first mail was sent overseas in 1992 when the Bundeswehr was deployed on a humanitarian mission to Cambodia. The name “Feldpost” was used officially for the first time one year later. Feldpost offers to military personnel everything that Deutsche Post would also provide at home: as well as transporting letters, packages, and parcels soldiers can also carry out their Postbank transactions at Feldpost offices. All this is available to Bundeswehr service personnel at regular at domestic rates.

Postal Service may move all to Stamford

The U.S. Postal Service is considering plans to consolidate the Bridgeport Processing and Distribution Facility to save USD 17.7 million over 10 years.

The Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General recently completed an “efficiency review” that found there is a “favorable business case” to transfer incoming mail processing operations from the facility in Bridgeport, Conn., to a larger facility in Stamford, Conn.

Outgoing mail processing was transferred last year to Stamford, but the Postal Service did not move incoming mail processing operations because of concerns that Stamford could not handle the additional volume of work. The recent review found that Stamford could handle the additional load.

The auditors found that Stamford has the capacity to process about 405 million additional letter pieces and could absorb the 242 million pieces of incoming mail that are now processed in Bridgeport.

The work hour savings could be accomplished through attrition since a large number of workers at the facilities are reaching retirement age. By the end of fiscal year 2011, there will be 57 of 95 Bridgeport employees and 198 of 446 Stamford employees eligible for retirement, the report said.

How not to let culture issues defeat mergers

Eight months after acquiring the semi-express carrier Speedage, mail company TNT India is still integrating the two entities.

It was in September 2006 that global express logistics major TNT, one of the world’s leading business to business express delivery companies, acquired the Indian semi-express carrier, Speedage.

This acquisition added 514 depots, 26 transit hubs, 730 vehicles and 1,195 employees (and about 1,300 sub-contracted staff) to TNT’s existing resources. The current staff strength of TNT in India is 2,500 people.

Eight months later, Abhik Mitra, managing director of TNT India, feels that they have reached a comfortable position as far as transformation and integration issues are concerned. At the time of the takeover the TNT management was clear that it would not implement its own processes from the very next day.

The real work, adds Mitra, started once the deal was sealed. Speedage and all its 1,300 employees were put through to a phased transformation and integration process.

The first few months were all about communication and sharing. The TNT culture and values programme was shared with the Speedage employees, as were the short-term goals of the merger and the long-term ambitions from it.

The second and third months were dedicated to making the changes within the organisation and sharing the TNT value system with them. Then began the cultural training, continuing until the fifth month.

Now UK Mail picks up the post at HSBC

HSBC has become the latest major bank to give Royal Mail the sack.

UK Mail, the postal arm of parcels courier Business Post, said today it now acts for three of the five High Street banks after HSBC joined Royal Bank of Scotland in ditching Royal Mail for the sorting for delivery of its bank statements.

Lloyds TSB had already switched to UK Mail’s arch-rival, the Dutch postal group TNT, but UK Mail today announced it had also picked up part of the Lloyds TSB contract.

Major customers such as the Department of Work and Pensions, the BBC, Vodafone, and Powergen helped UK Mail revenues soar from GBP 40m to GBP 90m in the year to the end of March, doubling profits to GBP 6.4m.

That compares with UK Mail forecasts at its launch in 2004 that within three years it would make GBP 10m on revenues of GBP 150m – about 3% of the GBP 5bn market.

Chief executive Guy Buswell said UK Mail missed the targets because VAT issues meant part of the market remained in favour of Royal Mail. Business Post’s group pre-tax profits doubled to GBP 9.8m but the dividend is pegged at 10.8p.
