PayPal granted banking licence

PayPal has been granted a banking licence by the Luxembourg financial services authority (CSSF) and has announcement that it will move its European headquarters to the country. The banking licence will enable PayPal to proactively market its Express Checkout service to retailers, a move which is prohibited under the terms of its current money licence – to date PayPal could only respond to retailers’ approaches to the company.

From 2 July, when the licence comes into effect, PayPal will be setting up local sales teams across Europe to expand the reach of its Express Checkout service – and therefore increase the number of retail sites accepting PayPal as a payment method.

The company says that Google’s launch of Checkout has no bearing on this move and it has no plans to extend its offering away from the online platform.

According to Forrester Research, 23% of European internet shoppers prefer paying with PayPal – which they can do at more than 100,000 websites in Europe.

In 2006, PayPal processed payments from “thousands of retailers” in Europe including Harrods, DHL, Meetic, Pixmania and Boots. The total payment volume in Europe reached GBP 4.29 billion. Over 15 million PayPal accounts are held by internet users in the UK.

Catalogers Deliver to Chicago Area via the Tribune

With the recent hike in postal rates, delivering direct mail via newspapers has become a popular way of getting catalogs into the hands of consumers.

With that in mind, the Tribune Company launched Direct Delivery +, a low-cost alternative available via the Chicago Tribune that allows catalogs to be delivered with the newspapers, writes DM News.

For 9 cents per catalog, a marketer provides the Chicago Tribune with their mail files, which are then matched against a list of paid newspaper subscribers at the sub-zip code level, looking for areas where there is a high percentage of matches between the brand marketer’s list and Tribune subscribers. Mailing via the USPS can cost as much as 20 cents per catalog.
The Tribune also offers lifestyle segmentation analyses of areas that are not necessarily on the cataloger’s mailing list to see if those areas are worth targeting.

The program is available only in Chicago, where the Chicago Tribune has more than 660,000 home-delivery subscribers on Sundays. The Tribune Company expects to roll out the program in other markets in 2008.

Environmental Emphasis Recognition for Pall-Ex

Fresh from winning the Leicestershire Business Of the Year Award 2007, pallet network industry leader Pall-Ex takes home another accolade.

Chosen as finalists for the International Freighting Weekly Environmental Award, Pall-Ex can add this achievement to a long line, which is echoed by their brimming trophy cabinet at the £12million purpose built facility, strategically located in the centre of the country in Ellistown, Leicester, close to junction 22 of the M1.

The very nature of this operation reduces journey length and underused capacity of fleet vehicles for all members of the Pall-Ex network, significantly reducing the environmental impact of vehicle emissions. This was however, just the beginning for the innovative entrepreneur Hilary Devey, Managing Director, who saw the opportunity to reduce emissions inside as well as outside her premises. Within the distribution hub, a fleet of 37 fork lift trucks run both day and night reorganising palletised freight into bays for onward delivery. These fork lift trucks all run on compressed natural gas, and not diesel, which limits emissions impact on the environment. Any emissions are mainly water based, which equates to cleaner air for the drivers to breathe, and no pollutants emitted that could contaminate freight.

Hilary Devey, Managing director and 100% owner of Pall-Ex commented “The very nature of the Pall-Ex concept is a brilliant way of uniting businesses around the country to reduce wasted journeys, increase profits, and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Where Pall-Ex particularly shines is by going the extra mile, for example by using compressed natural gas in their fork lift truck fleet. The innovative nature of the company has been the root of Pall-Ex success, and will mean the company will continue to outshine competitors into the future.”

The other two finalists are CitySprint and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, and the winner will be announced at a gala dinner in The Honourable Artillery Company, London.

Third Round Table of International Post-CIOs

IT-Managers of the Postal Organisations from Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria meet in Budapest

Since the first and second Post CIO Roundtable were very successful, the third international „Postal CIO Roundtable“ (PCR) will take place in Budapest on 24 May. The Post CIO Roundtable is an initiative launched by the Austrian post office (Österreichische Post AG), hosted by the Hungarian post office (Magyar Posta Zrt.) and is aimed at promoting information exchanges between the IT functions of postal organisations.

Although postal organisations are more than ever in competition with one another in largely liberalized markets, at this meeting of experts cooperation on the technical challenges is the focus. It is seen as a means of promoting the development of new postal IT solutions, leading to the marketing of member companies proprietary technologies. The Round Table is also viewed as a platform for establishing internationally applicable standard key performance indicators and initiating regular benchmarking processes.

The firm has 4,000 employees and 12 distribution centres (in Jalisco, Baja California Norte and Sur, Sinaloa, Sonora, Distrito Federal, Guanajuato, Nuevo Leon, Nayarit, Colima and Michoacan) plus 1,500 vehicles; it is the nation’s biggest such enterprise and focuses on mass-mailing and credit-card deliveries, having been founded 16 years ago.
