Pakistan Post would soon launch its new service of utility bills’ collection from homes, shops and offices to maximum facilitate its customers, said Director General Pakistan Post Arshad Khan here on Sunday. “You just make a telephone call and postman of the area will collect utility bill from your home,” the DG told a private television channel (ARY One World).

He said there are 300-350 night post offices across the country, which work 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Eight to ten night post offices are operating in Islamabad, while 70 to 80 night offices are working in Karachi city.

Pakistan Post’s network consists of 12,000 offices, spreading all over the country, Arshad Khan added.

He said the Pakistan Post is undergoing a transformational phase, which would ultimately bring services of the institution at par with the international standard. He said efforts are being made to make the organisation more efficient, customer-friendly, putting it on modern lines.

The DG said restructuring and re-organisation work of the Post is underway, besides making significant progress in human resource development it has decided to impart modern training to 15,000 staffers belonging to customer services, while 5,000 staffers have been trained up to now.

“Under the reformation plan, all counters of the Pakistan Post to be automated,” Arshad Khan said adding that the institution is also considering to provide micro-finance facility to its customers.

Australia Post to trial two new Hino hybrid vehicles

Australia Post has become the first customer in Australia to take delivery of a new hybrid truck which has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of its sizeable fleet.

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, accepted the new truck’s keys from its manufacturer, Hino Australia, on behalf of the corporation.

According to Coonan, the vehicle – which combines a diesel engine with hybrid technology – has great potential for Australia Post’s operations.

Australia Post is trialling two of these vehicles to transfer mail from inner-city lodgment areas back to its sorting facilities throughout Sydney.

The vehicles are ideally suited to urban stop-start operations, where constant use is made of the electric motor. They are also particularly useful to Australia Post in the city because they can access areas with underground docks that have height and width restrictions.

Steve Lotter, Hino Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, says Australia Post’s decision to take the hybrid is consistent with global experience in which leading postal services can readily recognise the potential of the hybrid system.

Lotter says that over the past two decades the motoring industry has introduced important breakthroughs, such as airbags and anti-lock brakes. Each started in a small way, but were soon taken up by the majority of manufacturers until they became universal and low-cost through economies of scale.

The Australia Post fleet travels a distance of approximately 173 million kilometres every year in delivering around 21 million items of mail each working day to over 10 million delivery points all over Australia.

Deutsche Post to open accounting centre in Poland

The inter-ministerial team for foreign investment is considering whether to support the investment of Deutsche Post. “The company plans to open a centre providing financial services and take on 500 people. It plans to situate it either in Wroclaw, Poznan or Gdansk,” said a high-ranking official. The centre is to offer accounting services. It would not only allow the company to make savings, but also help it to enter the Polish market. It is difficult to tell if the government wants to support this investment. The inter-ministerial team does not grant help to all applicants. Most recently, ABN Amro, which is opening a competence centre in Warsaw employing 590 people, was refused help. According to the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIIZ), by 2010 there are to be 50 similar centres with a staff of 550,000. The more centres are constructed, the less willing the government is to support them

Insurers targeted by Post Office

The Post Office has drawn up ambitious plans to quadruple its share of the home and motor insurance market in the next five years.

It aims to take on giants such as Norwich Union and Direct Line to become a top five motor and household insurer.

A subsidiary of Royal Mail, the Post Office is already one of the fastest-growing insurers, having written 500,000 policies since it entered the market two years ago.

It currently insures one in 50 cars in Britain. However, the company is aiming to write 2m policies, equivalent to GBP 1 billion in premium payments, by 2012.

If successful, the Post Office’s market share would increase from about 2% to 8%, propelling it from 15th largest motor and home insurer into the top five.

The British motor and home insurance market is led by Royal Bank of Scotland, which owns Direct Line and Churchill, with about 25% of the market and Norwich Union, with a share of about 19%.

The Post Office’s plans include a partnership deal until 2012 with Budget Group, a privately owned South African company, which produces branded insurance policies.

USPS to lower bar code height on Intelligent Mail

The U.S. Postal Service will lower the height of the bars in the Intelligent Mail bar code from .134 inches to .125 inches.

Charlie Bravo, senior vice president of Intelligent Mail and Address Quality at the USPS, announced the news May 16. The Intelligent Mail bar code, formerly called 4-State Customer Bar code, lets business mailers track up to one billion pieces of mail at a time and also allow them to more easily request services, including address correction and confirmation of delivery, and enable the USPS to process and deliver mail more efficiently.

In the past mailers expressed concern that the current length of the bar code makes them hard to read on some mail processing machines and others are concerned that the height of the bars takes up too much space or “real estate” on the envelope.

Mr. Bravo said that because of some software changes and testing, the change would take place in about nine months.

The bar code is the latest offering under the USPS Intelligent Mail program. The Postal Service expects that the program, begun in late 2001, to eventually let customers track every piece of mail from pickup to delivery. The bar code will be required to receive automation discounts in 2009.

In September, the use of Intelligent Mail bar codes for automation discounts became available for letter mail. The bar code became available for flats mail beginning May 1. Since the reading technology is different on flats than it is on letters, the USPS had delayed the start date for flats.
