FedEx delivers operation to New Haven facility

FedEx Home Delivery has outgrown its facility on the north side of Fort Wayne and plans to relocate to the FedEx Ground facility in New Haven that was built three years ago.

FedEx planned to start construction early this month on a 15,000-square-foot expansion of the 55,000-square-foot FedEx Ground facility. Executives expect the new location to be operational in August.

The relocation to New Haven is part of a nationwide expansion for FedEx Home Delivery.

The company is looking at adding nine new hubs and expanding 37 existing hubs, as well as relocating or expanding close to 300 local facilities, such as the one serving the Fort Wayne area.

Currently, FedEx Home Delivery operates a network of more than 500 distribution hubs and local terminals throughout the United States and Canada.

Bloomberg reported late last month FedEx Corp. has been growing more rapidly in U.S. ground shipping than its larger rival, United Parcel Service.

FedEx Ground volume rose 12 percent in the most recent quarter, while UPS gained 3.6 percent, according to analyst Donald Broughton of A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. in St. Louis.

Fortis and An Post partnership will create 100 new jobs

The euro 112 million banking service joint venture between the international financial services group Fortis and An Post will begin to offer savings and investment products to the public by mid-year and will create 100 new jobs by the end of 2007, the partners said in an update today.

The operation, which is subject to the granting of a banking licence by the Irish Financial Services Regulator, will initially offer these products from a selection of post offices. The service will be rolled out across the Post Office network over the next 12 months. The initial savings and investment products will be followed in the autumn by a broader range of banking products including Internet banking and ATM facilities.

Commenting today, Margaret Sweeney, Chief Executive of the joint venture said: “Plans for the development of the new retail bank are progressing well. We expect to have an initial presence in a cross section of post offices by June and to complete the installation of our services network over the next 12 months. While our presence will vary among Post Offices depending on the facilities available, our target is to be represented in more than 200 Post offices initially and to extend across the post office network over the following 12 months.”

DHL "Virtual Warehouse" service relaunched

DHL announced a new shipment visibility enhancement to its DHL Global Forwarding Consolidated Distribution Service (CDS), a US Import service that enables customers to reduce brokerage fees and shorten delivery times for shipments originating in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The new web-based tracking service provides point-to-point tracking for shipments as they pass through DHL’s international freight forwarding and U.S. Express network.

The relocation of manufacturing bases worldwide has required businesses to operate on a global scale, with products moving greater distances across multiple borders. To speed up shipments through this lengthened supply chain, DHL created CDS, a “virtual” warehouse which eliminates the need for a costly distribution center. With CDS, bulk shipments sent from overseas can be broken down and inducted directly into the DHL US Express or Global Forwarding network for final delivery to the end consumer, bypassing time-consuming warehouse stops.

With web-based tracking, DHL customers can now get full visibility of their goods through the CDS service, from point of production to point of purchase. Customers can track shipments from a single tracking site, and obtain near real time information on the status of shipments as they transfer from bulk international air or ocean line-haul shipments to smaller units within the DHL U.S. Express or Global Forwarding heavyweight network.

Postal Regulatory Commission sets date for comments on USPS

The Postal Regulatory Commission has set 20th April 2007 as the deadline for comments on the U.S. Postal Service’s request to allow the testing of the placement of repositionable notes on mailing envelopes until April 2, 2008.

The USPS filed a request with the PRC on April 2 to postpone the April 3 termination date for the repositionable notes test and extend the termination date for one additional year.

RPNs are sticky notes that can be placed on envelopes, catalogs, magazines or newspapers to highlight information or an offer. Because the notes can be removed easily, the recipient can place them somewhere handy as a reminder of the offer. The service was implemented on April 3, 2005.

The USPS also said that the filing of the request acts to postpone the current termination date. The USPS was granted a one-year extension of the repositionable note program in 2006 to take it through April 3, 2007.

At the time, the USPS said the extension was needed to make sure there is no disruption in service to customers planning spring mailings using RPNs, also known as “yellow stickies.”

RPNs are allowed on all letter- and flat-sized mail sent at discount First Class, Standard and Periodicals rates. The rate for RPN-bearing mail is 0.5 cents for First Class pieces and 1.5 cents for Standard and Periodicals pieces

Maltapost introduces new postcodes

Maltapost has introduced a new alphanumeric postcode, which is made up of three letters followed by four numbers. This new postcode will compliment the restructuring of Maltapost’s distribution system and continue to enhance further the efficiencies in the system.
The three letters in the new postcode indicate the locality, and the first three digits refer to the road/or street with the last digit referring to the actual street segment.

Maltapost introduced the new postcode of each dwelling in the Christmas Card sent last December. The new postcode can now be viewed on an online directory on the Maltapost website, www.maltapost.com.

Meanwhile, letters to households and commercial establishments are being mailed in the coming weeks as reminders to clients about their new postcode. Maltapost will be also sending three postcards to each residence with the respective postcode. These cards can be sent at no postal charge to friends and relatives, informing their preferred senders with the new postcode.

In 2006 Maltapost’s service obtained a record 92% J+1 result. This means that 92% of mail was delivered by the next day which is above the regulatory standard rate. The new postcode will assist Maltapost in improving the postal service to all its clients.

Fraport invests in China

Fraport AG, operator of Frankfurt airport, Europe’s biggest air cargo hub, has acquired a 24.5-percent stake in China’s X’ian airport.

Fraport Chairman Wilhelm Bender said the 50-million euro (USD67-million) investment was a “first step” toward further acquisitions in China, the world’s fastest-growing freight and express market.

It follows Fraport’s move into another Asian growth market, India, where it recently signed an agreement to modernize New Delhi’s airport.

State-owned China West Airport Group, the previous operator of X’ian, will continue to hold the majority of shares in the airport, which is situated in Shaanxi province in central China. Fraport expects to obtain approval from the Chinese government and complete the transaction by the third quarter of this year.

Fraport said it will take part in the commercial development of X’ian, including the construction of a second runway and extension of its terminal.

The X’ian acquisition vaults Fraport ahead of its main European cargo rivals, Paris, Amsterdam and BAA, owner of London Heathrow, which don’t yet have a presence in China.

Fraport also operates several airports in Germany, including Frankfurt Hahn, an all-cargo hub, as well as overseas, in Bulgaria, Turkey, Peru and Egypt.

The deal follows earlier moves into China by Fraport’s biggest customer and third-largest shareholder, Lufthansa, whose freight unit, Lufthansa Cargo, has established cargo joint ventures at Shenzhen International and Shanghai Pudong airports. DHL, another leading customer at Frankfurt airport, also flies to X’ian as part of its recently-established Chinese domestic air freight service.
