Online MBT comes to Palletforce

Online MBT, previously Mike Beer Transport, has joined the PalletFORCE palletised distribution network, as part of the Online Group’s commitment to providing its customers with the best possible service.

The Online Group added Mike Beer Transport to its network of transport centres just over a year ago and the recent change in name to Online MBT is designed to reinforce the Group’s identity as a provider of the most comprehensive range of products and services available in the industry. To complete the company’s integration into the Online Group, Online MBT has moved from Pall-Ex to the Group’s preferred pallet network, PalletFORCE.

Founded as Mike Beer Transport, Online MBT has over 25 years of experience in the haulage industry, and is ideally located within the Port Zone in Dover. The company’s expertise was most recently recognised at the 2005 Motor Transport Awards, when it won the coveted title of Haulier of the Year.

Palletised distribution has been a major growth area in road haulage over the last decade, offering a cost-effective solution to the quick delivery of small palletised consignments.

Royal Mail and Remploy pilot scheme for disabled workers

A partnership between Royal Mail and Remploy – the provider of employment services for disabled people – is set for a national roll-out following a successful pilot programme in the South East.

Over the past year, 32 Remploy candidates with disabilities or health conditions have been employed as postal workers. Eleven are based at the Jubilee Mail Centre in Hounslow, while candidates have also been placed into administration, sorting office and delivery roles.

The scheme is now being extended to Essex, Chelmsford, Chiswick and Guildford, prior to a national roll-out in April.

Mike O’Donovan, mail centre manager at the Jubilee Mail Centre, said: “Many people’s perceptions of disability have been turned around by working with Remploy and it’s great to know that the partnership will now be rolled out nationally.”

This year, Remploy aims to find 5,600 jobs for people with disabilities and health conditions in mainstream employment.

Pace of competition underlines challenges facing Royal Mail

Royal Mail today responded to Postcomm’s newly announced review of the 2006-2010 Price and Service Quality Control, saying:

• The UK mail market has fallen by 2% and is set to fall further.

• The drop in mail volumes compares with Postcomm’s predictions in setting the price control that the market would rise by between 1% and 2% annually.

• It is now increasingly likely that no other EU country will open its market to competition as Postcomm has done in the UK. This leaves our major rivals with protected home markets while at the same time they can enjoy a regulatory regime in the UK which is heavily tilted in their favour.

• Competition in the UK is developing at a much faster pace than originally predicted – Royal Mail’s competitors will handle around 2.5 billion letters this year, well ahead of expectations and equivalent to 25% of bulk business mail.

• That means that this year alone rivals are carrying around 600m more letters than had been anticipated when Postcomm set the price control, and although rivals require Royal Mail to deliver these letters over “the final mile” to homes and businesses, the price Royal Mail is allowed to charge for doing so doesn’t cover our costs.

• Royal Mail cannot compete fairly for business mail because the price control dictates that when we offer to lower our prices we have to reduce the amount we charge rivals to use our network by the same degree.

• As quality of service has improved across all our products and services our business customers are choosing to use Second Class and other cheaper services instead of First Class, reducing Royal Mail’s revenues.

DHL launches new international gateway in Merida, Mexico to serve US-Mexico shipments

DHL today announced the opening of a new gateway in Merida, Mexico to enhance service quality and meet the growing needs of DHL customers shipping across the US-Mexico border.

The recently installed international gateway operation will increase DHL handling capacity by more than 87 percent in the region, enabling the transport of more than 38,000 additional shipments per year. The investment is part of a strategic DHL development plan for Mexico’s Southeastern Region. The strategy will enable DHL to increase its routes and capacity, as well as expand service coverage and provide enhanced customer service.

The new Merida Gateway provides both U.S. and businesses based throughout the region (including those located in Cancun, Ciudad del Carmen, Villahermosa, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and Minatitlan), with a new facility for the transshipment of goods across the US-Mexico border. DHL’s Merida gateway has been authorized by the Mexico national customs authority to operate as a customs facility for the consolidation of the area’s imports and exports.

With the establishment of the Merida gateway, DHL will manage the customs clearance process through a local agent from start to finish, which will reduce average international delivery service times into the cities of Merida, Cancun, Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche from two days to one. DHL customers will receive specialized service by contracting with the agent of their choice.

Before the Merida gateway, shipments bound to the area from the U.S. were processed by Customs in Mexico City. “By having a Merida-based customs agent process shipments, U.S. businesses benefit because DHL can move shipments through customs without intermediate delays,” said Rosano.

TNT projects fast growth in Brazil

After the acquisition of Brazilian express company Mercúrio in January 2007, TNT wants to accelerate its growth in Brazil. With 100 depots and around 6,000 employees, Mercúrio offers TNT a pole position for its South American growth strategy.

“TNT is aiming for double digit growth in Brazil as the domestic express market booms. TNT becomes the first express services company in this country to offer both domestic and international deliveries,” said TNT’s chief executive officer Peter Bakker in São Paulo.

TNT’s group managing director express, Marie Christine Lombard, added: “Orders from TNT’s global customers will boost Mercúrio’s activities in Brazil. Conversely, Mercúrio opens us the doors of another dynamic economy. The acquisition of Mercúrio fits into TNT’s strategy of becoming number one in emerging markets.”
