Bank boost for Post Office network

Ireland’s biggest banking group is to link up with the state-backed post company in a move that will lead to 1,000 post offices becoming its agents.
The alliance between Allied Irish Banks (correct) and An Post is part of a strategy on the part of the bank to maintain a branch presence in all of Ireland’s rural towns and villages, and comes at a time when a number of local post offices have been seen as under threat of closure on financial viability grounds.

THE price of a first-class stamp may fall for the first time under plans being considered by the industry regulator.
PostComm, the independent regulator whose task is to provide customers with a better deal by bringing the former Post Office under greater competitive pressure, is looking at a range of price-control options, including a forced cut in the price of both first-class and second-class stamps.

Deutsche Post fights for Transoflex

Deutsche Post AG, the German postal service, is convinced that its proposed bid for a 100 per cent stake in express delivery group Transoflex will go forward in spite of a clear rejection by Germany’s competition regulator. The anti-trust office has opposed the deal on the grounds that it would create a position of market dominance for Deutsche Post in business parcels and strengthen its existing domination of the market for mail order.

House Panel Rejects Security Funding for USPS

The House Rules Committee late last night voted against giving the U.S. Postal Service $500 million to pay for mail sanitation equipment.
The 8-2 vote killed an amendment to an $20 billion Defense Department appropriations bill that would have been the first installment of funds on the $3 billion that Postmaster General John Potter requested to help pay for equipment to rid the mails of biological agents such as anthrax.
