Axe hovers over up to 8000 post offices

FEARS that Britain may lose up to half of its post offices grew yesterday.

Consignia, the new name for the Post Office, dismissed reports of such large-scale closures as “pure speculation”.

However, a spokesman admitted yesterday: “We know that, of our 17,500 post offices, some are not viable and some may have to be closed.”

CitySprint acquired from DMS in MBO

UK same-day courier company CitySprint has been acquired in a multi-million pound management buyout (MBO) deal from troubled Dispatch Management Services DMS and its new owners are predicting double-digit growth in 2002.
“We are looking at growth of 15-20% annually over the next three years,” said chief executive Andrew Bernard, who led the buyout. “We see that as realistic in 2002. Tt means increasing market share, but it has to be managed effectively.”

Chronopost Portugal to open new distribution centre

The courier, express and parcel service provider will open one of the largest distribution centres on the Iberian peninsula at Valongo (in the Porto conurbation) in March. The new complex offers 5200 sqm of covered and 10,000 sqm of open storage area and replaces the existing facility in Maia. It will cost approximately EUR 2.5 million to build. Some 200 people will he employed at the new centre.
