Regulator set to open third of postal market

The UK’S postal regulator is set to throw open nearly a third of the Royal Mail’s market to competition in a move which will put £1.25bn of business at risk. PostComm is expected to unveil a radical shake-up of the postal system at the end of the month which will result in rival operators being granted long-term contracts to compete with Consignia for 30 per cent of its monopoly business.

La poste asks for state aid for 35 hour week

For the second time La Poste, the French post office, has asked the state for help with switching to the 35 hour week. In 1999 it was refused on the grounds that it manages a monopoly, but it can now say that in 2001 55 per cent of its activity was in a competitive market.

UPS Capital & Fritz win contracts with Eurofrut

Eurofrut plc, a U.K. company that imports fruit from South Africa and distributes it to supermarkets across Britain, now is financing its business and moving its product through UPS.
Through its own U.K. subsidiary, UPS Capital advances Eurofrut up to 85% of the value of its invoices within one business day of issuance compared to the 28 – 35 day delay in receiving payment that is standard in the grocery-supplier industry.

Improve post services minister tells Consignia

The Government today warned Consignia it had “no alternative but to improve” postal services.
Trade and Industry Minister of State Douglas Alexander told the Commons it was determined to see improvements in the company and was taking “active steps” to bring them about.
Consignia came under fire from MPs at question time with accusations of “persistent failure” to deliver quality services to millions of homes and businesses.
