Doorstep mail deliveries help Express Dairies return to profit

Express Dairies, which was awarded a Postcomm mail delivery licence in April, yesterday said it is already delivering 100,000 items a week and has deals to deliver books, CDs, contact lenses and catalogues. It said it has an agreement with Trueprint to deliver photos with other deals in the pipeline. The licence entitles it to deliver 46 million items a year and Neil Davidson, the chief executive, said he was pleased with progress so far. He added that the new service was increasing the revenue that could be made by its milkmen, who operate on a franchise basis. “This is helping reduce turnover among our franchisees, which is helping reduce the decline in our doorstep milk delivery business,” he said.

Amtrak chosen by Laura Ashley

Clothing and hom furnishings retailer Laura Ashley has chosen Amtrak Express Parcels to provide its UK courier services. Amtrak will handle home delivery of items ordered through the companys mail order catalogue, as well as providing collection and delivery services to its 212 stores.

TNT Logistics contract win

Electrical wholesaler Hagemeyer has awarded a five-year UK distribution contract to TNT Logistics. The contract, worth more than GBP10m (Eur14m) a year, involves deliveries to more than 200 outlets servicing Hagemeyer’s operating companies, including Newey & Eyre, WF Electrical, Barron, A&A Security and Parker Merchanting.

No German redundancies at Deutsche Post

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, has not ruled out further job cuts abroad. However, management has assured that no redundancies are to take place in Germany, where any staff reductions carried out would take place through natural wastage. The company is also reported to be planning further acquisitions.

Spanish Nacex Opens Logistics Platforms in Seville, Vitoria

Spanish express delivery firm Nacex, a subsidiary of logistics company Logista, has opened two new logistics platforms in Seville and Vitoria, in southwestern and northern Spain respectively, the company said on June 16, 2003.

Nacex has also expanded its facilities in Jaen and Valencia, southern and eastern Spain. The investments in the new facilities and the expansion of already existing ones totalled 1.0 mln euro ($1.2 mln), the company said.

Nacex, founded in 1995, has currently a network of 249 agencies and 14 logistics platforms, which offer a geographic coverage of Spain, Andorra and Portugal.
