Postcomm consults on a long term licence for UK Speedmail

Postcomm has issued a consultation notice proposing the issue of a long term licence to Speedmail International Limited to provide bulk mail, consolidated mail and tracked business-to-business mail services. Speedmail already holds an interim licence, and Postcomm is also consulting on a change to this which will mean that Speedmail will continue to be able to provide mailroom services.

Increased online shopping expected by UK Royal Mail

UK postal company Royal Mail has predicted that there will be £3bn spent online in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

The company goes on to state that this amount will be double what was spent last year and will mean that £15bn will have been spent online throughout 2003, again double the total for 2002.

Obasanjo orders Nigeria Post to deliver mail within 48hrs

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has directed the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to ensure that all mails within the country are delivered within 48 hours against the present delivery time of 72 hours by the organization.

Similarly, with effect from December 2003, NIPOST will solely be responsible for the distribution of NITEL Bills throughout the federation.

UK Christmas post strike threat flares

The threat of a pre-Christmas strike by postal workers flared since it was confirmed that unions leaders in London were pressing for two 24-hour walkouts in a long-running row over pay.

The London divisional committee of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) is calling for strikes in the capital on December 19 and 22 in protest at lack of progress at talks aimed at resolving a number of issues, including pay and delivery patterns.

DHL plans €50 million Indian investment

Express and logistics company, DHL Express, plans to invest €50 million in infrastructure in India between 2003 and 2007. The company will set up new express terminals at Mumbai and Chennai airports, apart from investing in service centres and in new vehicles.

Emirates Post and Deutsche Post cement strategic alliance

The new agreement between Emirates Post and Deutsche Post supports and underpins the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2003. “Our strategic alliance with Deutsche Post embraces several business areas, including mail consolidation through the GLOBALMATCH network of hubs, a concept that is transforming mail logistics globally,” said Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General, Emirates Post. “We are an active member of this network and are keen to take this relationship further by promoting GLOBALMATCH, a dynamic new concept that is helping postal operators achieve savings in time and money, while at the same time introducing automation, speed and tracking facility in mail delivery operations. We are positive the new agreement will lead to further gains on both sides and strengthen this crucial partnership.”

Dutch TPG unit back on track and hints at growth

TPG, Dutch postal group, has said its poorly performing logistics units were back on track and added that it was considering offering to run the supply chain operations of Ahold, the troubled grocery group.

Peter Bakker, TPG chief executive, also said he would make several significant announcements early 2004 about expansion in China. Addressing a meeting of journalists at the company’s headquarters, Mr Bakker said TPG’s struggling logistics units in Germany and France and its non-automotive operations in Italy had, in recent weeks, met or exceeded profit forecasts.
