DHL to build largest US on-airport service center in Charlotte, N.C.

DHL today announced plans to build its largest US on-airport service center facility at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. DHL expects to invest USD6 million in the development of the new facility, consolidating four Charlotte, N.C.-area facilities into a single service center location. The new 80,200-sq.-ft. facility will serve the Charlotte, N.C. and surrounding areas, including Morrisville, Concord, Kings Mountain and Salisbury, as well as parts of South Carolina. The new facility will enhance the efficiencies of the Southeast operation and improve service delivery times as well as provide a later pickup service offering for customers in the area.

DHL set to invest USD70 mln in Incheon Airport

DHL is considering investing USD70 million to build a cargo terminal and warehouse at Incheon International Airport, the main gateway to South Korea, government officials said Tuesday. DHL’s chief executive Frank Appel will deliver such an investment offer to Minister Choo Byung-jik on Wednesday, according to the officials at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.
DHL’s holding company Deutsche Post World Net is set to invest USD20 million for its cargo terminal and USD50 million for its air cargo warehouse at the airport, the officials said.

TNT and Cosco enter strategic partnership to jointly develop China and Asia Pacific logistics business

Cosco Group together with TNT unveil a strategic partnership, with the formation of a Joint Venture (JV). The announcement is made jointly by Captain Wei Jiafu, President of Cosco Group and Mr Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT. The partnership will enable Cosco to further penetrate into the Asia Pacific logistics market, and it will enable TNT to expand its presence in China as well as its China-linked logistics business. As a first step in this strategic partnership, both industry leaders today signed the Letter of Intent for the establishment of a logistics JV. The JV aims at becoming the world’s recognised leader in supply chain management in the Asia Pacific region. The combined strengths of both companies will create more comprehensive service offerings and geographical coverage to customers. The new 50/50 JV is expected to be operational in 2006.

New national chair for Postwatch

Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, Alan Johnson, has appointed Urmila Banerjee as the new National Chair of The Consumer Council for Postal Services.
Urmila (Millie) Banerjee CBE is a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the communications regulator Ofcom and a Member of the Strategy Board of the Cabinet Office. She will take up her post as Postwatch Chair on 1 December 2005.
Welcoming her appointment Alan Johnson said: “I am delighted that Urmila Banerjee has agreed to be the new Postwatch Chair. She brings considerable experience to the role at a time of significant change within postal services and consumer representation. I am sure she will make a valuable contribution in shaping the strategic direction of Postwatch and their ongoing work in support of postal users.” The Secretary of State also paid tribute to the outgoing Chair, Peter Carr.

FedEx eyes China’s potential logistics market

FedEx Corp is training eager eye on China. Frederick W. Smith, founder, chairman, and CEO of FedEx, said on November 9 that the fast-growing Chinese market draws global attention at present, and the company had achieved great development in recent years thanks to the Asian market, especially China.
Therefore, FedEx aims to expand its business in the potential country. However, it has no intention to set up a wholly owned enterprises but joint ventures in the near future. The US based company plans to set up its Asia Pacific distribution center in the new Baiyun Airport of Guangzhou, and the construction work is expected to be finished by 2008.

Business Post caught in parcels downturn

Parcels group Business Post sent its shares into tailspin today by delivering its second profits warning in three months. Investors reeled from the news that Business Post was no longer handling as many parcels a day as it was last year and its annual profits were now likely to fall 20% short of market hopes.
Volumes at its Express unit, which makes overnight deliveries between businesses, were up 8% at the start of the year but have worsened since then to be 3.5% below 2004 levels in September. This matters because 40% of the costs of operating its network of around 60 depots are fixed, reducing the freedom of Business Post to act when volumes fall.

DHL to build distribution centre in Dutch Drachten

DHL will build a distribution centre in Drachten, northern Netherlands, the mayor of the municipality of Smallingerland, Pieter van der Zaag, said on November 11, 2005. For the purpose, DHL has bought a site of 40,000 sq m in the industrial zone Azeven Zuid near Drachten. The distribution centre will create jobs for 200 employees. The plan for the construction of the distribution centre was announced almost two years ago.
