TNT and union to aim to protect working conditions on German postal market

TNT Post, the Dutch postal service provider, which is also present on the German market, has announced that it plans to collaborate with the services sector union Ver.di to prevent the end of the mail monopoly for German postal operator Deutsche Post from leading simply to a cost war.

TNT Post and the union plan to press for working conditions to be subject to minimum standards.

Cargus banks on 45% rise in turnover

Cargus, the domestic and international courier company derived gross profit worth 2.1 million euros last year, down from the previous year’s figures, according to the company’s preliminary results.

“Compared with 2005, when we posted profit worth approximately 2.5 million euros and turnover amounting to 15.3 million euros, we witnessed a slight decline in 2006, due to the fact that we spent more on investments,” said Augustin Plesea, general manager of the company.

Last year Cargus invested 2.5 million euros in a car fleet, software programmes and promotional activities.

The company estimates turnover will rise this year to 29 million euros, a 45% increase from last year.

Australia Post aims high with AUD150m lease

Takeover target Multiplex is poised to execute one of the Melbourne CBD’s largest office pre-leases through a $150 million deal with Australia Post.

Multiplex is expected to sign Australia Post to 42,000sqm of space at its planned Southern Cross West tower, even though the postal authority still hasn’t completely ruled out the option of building its own new national headquarters in Spencer Street or moving to the APN Property Group’s 567 Collins Street.

But with Southern Cross the hot favourite it’s a timely boost for Multiplex, which only last week announced it had received an approach from a so far undisclosed suitor.

Multiplex shares surged on the news last Thurday, rising 17 per cent to AUD4.85, but have since eased to close yesterday at AUD4.45.

Exhibition Street’s existing Southern Cross East office tower, 75 per cent owned by Multiplex and already filled with mostly Victorian Government workers, is one of the group’s largest single assets, with a March 2006 valuation of AUD390 million.

The west tower, to face Bourke Street, is the second office building planned for the development, which is on the site of the once Nauruan Government-owned five-star Southern Cross Hotel.

The 22-level building, expected to have around 45,000sqm of space, has so far cost AUD6 million.

Australia Post is understood to be ready to pay a rental of around AUD350 a square metre, with a deal reflecting an incentive of about 15 per cent of lease’s value.

An initial lease period of 10 years is expected.

Grant Samuel, which is advising Australia Post on its national headquarters move from Cromwell’s 321 Exhibition Street, has put up APN’s 567 Collins Street development site as an option.

APN bought the site from soft drink millionaire Spiros Stamoulis for about AUD25 million midway through last year. The site has approval for a 50,000sqm office building.

WH Smith's Swann hails 'fantastic' response to UK Post Office trial

Kate Swann, chief executive of WH Smith PLC, the newspapers, books and stationery retailer, said customer reaction to its experiment of in-store franchised Crown Post Office outlets has been very positive — a strong signal that the controversial trial will be extended across the group’s network.

Five other trial stores, in Swansea, Shrewsbury, Slough, Ashton-under-Lyne and Altrincham, have been running since the autumn — their establishment coinciding with the closure of traditional Post Offices in the same locations and consequent job losses.

Swann explained the trial has gone well as the outlets take up a relatively small amount of space but drive footfall. She noted that incremental sales of stationery products had been a feature.

A spokeswoman for WH Smith, which trades from 543 high street stores and 129 outlets at airports, train stations and motorway service areas, said the retailer is in constant dialogue with the Post Office and would say more about the trial when it publishes interim results on April 19.

Royal Mail to convert former egg-packing plant!

UK Royal Mail bosses have got the green light to convert a former egg-packing plant near Winchester to handle part of their Southampton operation.

Planners gave the scheme to adapt the Humphrey Farms facility their backing.

It is the latest step in the postal service’s GBP10m scheme to move from its West Bay Road site in Southampton docks, which is seeing 245 city workers shifted around the county.

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, the Royal Mail is quitting the historic 10.5 acre site, which at one time handled much of Britain’s overseas post, because it is too expensive to modernise.

As a result, 100 staff will move to Marchwood, while a further 125 who work for Parcelforce are going to Fareham.

The remaining 20 employees are being transferred to the former egg-packing plant at Twyford, that was vacated last year by Freshlay Foods.

Deutsche Post launch 2007 Mailing Competition

Deutsche Post and the Siegfried Vögele Institute will again award German advertising agencies for their outstanding creative performances in dialogue marketing with the “2007 Mailing Competition” (Mailing-Wettbewerb 2007). There are five categories in which the agencies can submit their most successful mailings from their 2006 portfolios until 2 March 2007.

As well as the categories “Standard Format”, “Open Format”, “Partially Addressed Mailings” and “Self-Advertising”, the category “Political Communication” has become increasingly important for effective dialogue with citizens. Governmental and non-governmental institutions can submit contributions to the “Political Communication” category.

The Mailing Competition has been a highly approved award throughout Germany for many years. In 2006 nearly 400 agencies participated submitting over 600 to win the Dialogue Award. In a preliminary round regional juries award a prize to up to three winners per category. These participate in the national finals with a renowned and expert jury, which will take place at the Siegfried Vögele Institute in Königstein/Taunus near Frankfurt. The criteria for evaluating entries are design and strategy; creative idea and its implementation; customized approach and campaign effectiveness.
