France's TAT Express becomes Tatex

French B2B parcels carrier TAT Express has rebranded to become known simply by its previous standard abbreviation Tatex and is changing its logo and identity to reflect new company values – closer relationships with clients and a small and medium-sized enterprise “spirit”.

Tatex, which transports 19 million parcels a year and has an annual turnover of over EUR 150 million, was formed in 1976 by the TAT air company and has 1,300 staff, 800 vehicles, 34 branches, five regional transit centres and a national hub in southern Paris of 14,500 sqm.

La Poste subsidiary GeoPost sold the majority of TAT Express to XAAP Finances in 2005. The rebranding to Tatex will take place this year.

One of the first steps by Tatex has been to extend by one hour the cut-off time for deliveries, from 12.00 to 13.00, which came into effect on 1 January. The company’s web site is being modified to bring its product portfolio and timetables up to date.

Express mail and delivery firms diversifying in the Czech Republic

With the European and Czech market of postal services slated to be fully liberalized by 2009, the Czech state-owned post office Ceska posta (CP) continues broad remedies to withstand the impact of competition, which is driven by the market to boost services, increase quality and reduce prices.

“Within two years, Ceska posta will be a different company,” said Ivo Mravinac, the director of communications with CP. The ongoing changes are concentrated on two major levels — the internal restructuring of the company and the conversion into joint-stock company.

For the past couple of years, the Czech government harbored plans to privatize the company and finally last fall the board of trustees of CP charged company CEO Karel Kratina to work out the details of the transformation into a state owned joint-stock company. “There’s no time-schedule for the whole process or for its individual steps,” Mravinac said, adding that the final deadline is Jan. 1, 2009, when the Czech postal services market is to be fully liberalized, but that the company hopes to reach its target sooner.

Nipost Undergoing Transformation

The Nigerian Postal Services, NIPOST, is undergoing transformation. Within the first quarter of this year, a number of the post offices are to go on-line so as to be able to fit adequately into an information technology-driven world.

Also, to checkmate the various cases of abandoned projects, the parastatal has secured the services of reputable consultants, who are to complete the buildings and put them into viable use on a Build, Operate and Transfer, BOT, basis.

That is not all. NIPOST has concluded plans to partner with Oceanic Bank International and Ecobank in its quest to redesign all the post offices in the country, to look customer-friendly. Pilfering of mails and parcels will soon be a thing of the past in all post offices. This is because, a mechanism has been put in place to track items from their points of despatch to their destinations, just as cameras are being installed in some post offices to check unwholesome tampering with items.

Ibrahim Baba, postmaster general, who reeled out these goodies, explained that in no distant time, all post offices across the country would be provided with computers as a prelude to linking them with Internet services. NIPOST has introduced Airpost express, which is a by-product of the Express Mail Service, EMS. The concept is such that people can have their items sent to their destinations within a space of six hours. The items are sent by air and delivered to their destinations based on the agreement reached with the sender. For now, Abuja and Lagos are being used under a pilot scheme.

Baba said NIPOST still had some challenges confronting it. Some of these include constant power supply, which is necessary to keep alive the dream of an IT-driven NIPOST and bad roads which make smooth movement of delivery vans difficult.
