UPS plans more international acquisitions

UPS will continue to buy express and parcel companies around the world to expand its highly profitable international business, according to senior executives. At the same time, it aims to grow its air freight and supply chain logistics activities to penetrate its large customer base more deeply.

“We will make acquisitions as we see fit around the world,” CEO Mike Eskew told the company’s November 8 Investor Day conference. Chief Financial Officer Scott Davis added that UPS saw “ acquisition opportunities” in the global small package business but stressed the company would be careful in selecting these takeovers.

Davis pointed out that UPS aimed for International to grow to 33% of operating profits by 2010 compared to 24% in 2006, with supply chain doubling to 7% and domestic operating profits dropping from 73% to 60% of overall operating income. UPS aimed to maintain or extend its international profit margins and maximise international operating profits, he added.

David Abney, head of UPS’s international business, said in a presentation that Europe now generated about 50% of UPS’ international revenues, ahead of 30% for the Americas (including US exports) and 20% for Asia. In Europe, UPS aimed to grow organically and through selective acquisitions, while deepening customer relationships and differentiating products in core markets such as Germany and the UK.

FedEx drops Airbus order and goes with Boeing

FedEx Express, which is based in Memphis, Tenn., canceled its order for 10 Airbus A380 superjumbo jets and went with 15 Boeing 777 long-range aircraft.

The FedEx Corp. Tuesday said in a statement that “significant delays” in the A380 deliveries prompted the shift to the U.S. aeronautics giant.

Besides ordering 15 airborne freighters, each of which carries a list price of around USD236 million, FedEx also obtained an option for another 15 Boeing 777 aircraft.

“The availability and delivery timing of this aircraft, coupled with its attractive payload range and economics, make this choice the best decision for FedEx, its customers, shareowners and employees,” said FedEx Chief Executive Frederick Smith.

FedEx Express continues to be Airbus’ largest wide-body airplane customer and will add new and used Airbus wide-body aircraft to its fleet. Six new A300-600 aircraft are scheduled to join the FedEx fleet in 2007.

The 777 is the world’s largest twin-engine cargo aircraft with a range of more than 6,100 nautical miles and a revenue payload capacity of 171,000 pounds. FedEx expects to take delivery of four of the 777 aircraft in calendar year 2009, eight in 2010 and the remaining three in 2011.

Shanghai Airlines to Build Global Cargo Network

Shanghai Airlines Cargo International Co., Ltd., the cargo venture of Shanghai Airlines Co., Ltd., started to make a profit of more than CNY 2 million in September after coming into production in July.

The venture, jointly set up by China’s first commercial airline and Sino Prime Ltd. and Juniper Estate BV, two subsidiaries of Taiwan’s EVA Airways Corp., is predicted to see its profit grow sharply in October.

Shanghai Airlines Cargo International Co. got one MD-11 all-cargo plane and two Boeing 757 freighters from Shanghai Airlines, who holds a 55% stake in the venture. In late July, it introduced one Boeing 747 freighter.

It has captured an 11% share in the air cargo market in Shanghai, the country’s economic center, only three months after its inception. Within the year, it will also buy one MD-11 freighter, making it own five large-sized all-cargo aircraft merely half a year after its establishment.

Shanghai Airlines Cargo International Co. has launched routes to Los Angeles, Frankfort, Singapore, Bangkok, Osaka, Bombay, Macao, Hong Kong, and so forth, laying solid foundation for it to make a profit.
