China Post opens new domestic air express hub at Nanjing

China Post has started operations at its new air express hub at Nanjing in eastern China ahead of schedule in its latest move to defend its leadership of the domestic express market and expand its international activities.

Its airline subsidiary China Postal Airlines launched flights to and from Nanjing Lukou airport in mid-July even though construction of new taxiways and parking aprons as well as the main express handling building is not expected to be completed until end-August, the Xinhua news agency reported.

China Post announced on August 1 that its 12 cargo planes are operating to and from Nanjing. Once the hub is fully completed, China Post plans to operate 20 cargo planes at the airport and handle about 40,000 tonnes of express shipments a year there.

China Post officials claimed that the express hub will be the largest and most modern in Asia, and will enable it to speed up express services within the country. It will be composed of a freight terminal for postal night planes, modern sorting and distribution equipment, and customs and security facilities. The hub will handle and distribute domestic and international EMS items arriving at night, and complete within four hours all the processes of loading, sorting, security checking and customs clearance.

As well as upgrading domestic air express services, China Post has been gradually expanding international operations. China Postal Airlines launched flights to South Korea (Seoul) and Japan (Osaka) last year.

In July, China Post and Japan Post sealed a bilateral agreement on express services, including wider international express services between the two countries, and opening the way for Japan Post to buy into a China Post subsidiary.

India Post: pay traffic fine to postman at your doorstep

Long queues for depositing traffic “challans” at collection centers will soon be a thing of the past in the Capital, thanks to a novel initiative by the Delhi traffic police that will send the postman to your doorstep to collect the fine.

Joining hands with the Indian Postal Department, the traffic police have introduced a system under which the postman, who earlier just delivered traffic violation notices, has been authorized to collect the “challan” amount as well.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Qamar Ahmed said all that a violator has to do is to pay the fine amount along with an additional Rs.5 as service charge through a money-order.

The violator will have to paste the counterfoil of the notice on the money-order form and retain the original copy and a receipt issued by the postman. In turn, the postman will be given some incentive for this additional task.

The initiative will also help the traffic police — which issue 12,000 to 15,000 notices every day — cut down substantially on manpower, which could be deployed for more important activities like traffic regulation.

The latest system ensures almost no interaction between violators and the traffic police. The traffic violation details are gathered from various sources – like red-speed camera, traffic monitoring system, e-mail, SMS, complaint cards and helpline — and are processed online in the traffic server installed at Teen Murti Traffic Police Lines. The processing is carried out through an indigenously developed software application that accesses ownership details from the master database, interfaces them with violation details and then prints out the notices. The traffic police also developed a software that will enable payment of “challans” at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). It is learnt the UTI Bank and the Oriental Bank of Commerce have already given their initial consent for providing such a facility through their ATMs.

Chinese CEP market to outgrow Germany

The booming Chinese courier, express and parcel (CEP) market will outgrow Europe’s largest market, Germany, within fi ve years if it maintains its current dynamic growth rates. The world’s four leading express players, DHL, FedEx, TNT and UPS, look set to win signifi cant market share from Chinese operators by expanding their domestic services. In response, Chinese players are trying to strengthen their fi nancial basis and enhance their services. Those are the key fi ndings of a new “CEP Market Fact Sheet China” from Hamburg-based market researchorganisation, CEP-Research.

The Chinese CEP market has soared with average annual growth rates of about 25 percent in recent years, nearly quadrupling in value from about EUR 1 billion in 2000 to over EUR 3.8 billionin 2006, according to CEP.

Demand has been driven by economic liberalisation, a surge in foreign trade and the emergence of a strong domestic consumer market. Looking ahead, growth rates in the 25 percent- 30 percent range are expected for the next few years, taking the market to over EUR 12.5 billion in 2011, CEP-Research forecasts. This would make China bigger than Germany, France and UK, the three largest express and parcel marketsin Europe.
