Japanese gov't to allow mail posted at convenience stores:

The government is finalizing a plan to allow people to post mail at convenience stores and delivery companies’ outlets in a bid to encourage new entrants into the mail business, now effectively monopolized by the public Japan Post, the Asahi Shimbun reported Saturday. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is reportedly examining a plan to abolish a rule under the mail service laws that says mail can only be accepted at postboxes, and another rule that prevents new entrants from access to Japan Post’s mail service networks.
The changes will remove a major hurdle for entering the mail service business – setting up some 100,000 postboxes across Japan – for any newcomers when the business is opened to private competitors in 2007, the daily said.

DHL wins 600 mln usd logistics contract for Chinese nuclear project

DHL Global Forwarding said it will provide transportation services to China Nuclear Power Engineering Company (CNPEC) for the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station project phase II development in the southern province of Guangdong.

The logistics provider said in a statement that the three year contract, which will be run by its China subsidiary Danzas ZF Freight Agency, is worth over 600 mln usd.

Pos Malaysia, SingPost launch promotion to enhance express delivery service

Pos Malaysia Berhad and Singapore Post (SingPost) today launched a promotion drive to enhance their cross-broder express mail delivery service. Under the promotion, which will last a year, Malaysians and Singaporeans will enjoy special rates for certain classes of mail. SingPost group chief executive Lau Boon Tuan said this initiative was taken to further strengthen the existing close ties between the two parties for mutual benefit and also customers on both sides. “SingPost hopes this close cooperation will result in more value added services at attractive rates for our customers,” he said in a joint press release with Pos Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Ikmal Hijaz Hashim when the latter visited SingPost’s Malaysian heaquarters here today.

DHL, FedEx, UPS raise fuel surcharges in China

DHL, FedEx and UPS raise their fuel-related surcharges in China as of June, in a move to offset the increasing operational costs resulting form soaring oil prices in the international market since 2005. DHL-Sinotrans, Brussels-based DHL’s China joint venture, lifted fuel surcharges from 11.5% to 13.5% today, while the two US tycoons FedEx and UPS each announced an increase from 13.5% to a record high of 15%, which will come into effect on June 5. In stark contrast, Express Mail Service (EMS), the express service arm of state-run China Post, did not announce any markup on fuel surcharges or any change in service charges.
