Financial, distribution experts eyed ahead of Japanese postal privatization

Japan Post Corp. will recruit private-sector experts in financial and international parcel delivery services before the privatization of Japan’s state-run postal services begins in 2007, company officials said Sunday.
Securing such experts to compete with private-sector companies is a pressing task for the company, which mainly consists of officials from the public corporation Japan Post, they said. Japan Post Corp., created last Monday by the public corporation as a new stock firm, will convert itself into a holding company in October 2007 to place four postal services companies under its wing.
Most of Japan Post Corp.’s 45 employees are from the public corporation, with their status changing from that of public employee to private-sector official. Japan Post Corp. plans to eventually boost the number of its workers to 100.

SingPost's third-quarter profit jumps 17% to 33m dollars

Singapore Post (SingPost) achieved a 17 per cent jump in third-quarter net profit to 32.8 million dollars, thanks to a better performance in its mail, logistics and retail businesses. Operating revenue was up 7 per cent to 108 million dollars for the quarter ended Dec 31. In its core mail business, international and hybrid mail did well. The logistics business was strong with more demand for its Speedpost express delivery services. The retail division was also strong with growth in financial services and vPost mail-order transactions. Operating profit at its mail business rose 12 per cent in the quarter from the previous year to 33 million dollars. Logistics posted a 50 per cent jump in profits to 3 million dollars, while the retail business saw a 27 per cent profit rise to 2.7 million dollars. Revenue for the nine months was up 9.4 per cent to 307.8 million dollars, while the bottom line rose 10.8 per cent to 92.4 million dollars.

DHL sees USD1.3 trillion Asia market

DHL expects the Asian freight market to grow by 83 percent to UD1.3 trillion by 2020 from USD700 billion now. Asia will continue to lead the world air cargo industry in average annual growth rates, with intra-Asian air cargo markets expanding 8.5 percent per year while express volume is expected to grow twice the rate of total worldwide air cargo, Yasmin Aladad Khan, senior vice president, Southeast Asia, DHL Express Asia Pacific, told reporters at the launch of the DHL Subang Gateway in Malaysia today.

New SingPost express courier service shortens delivery time

Delivery time for overseas packages is now shorter and less of a hassle, thanks to a new express courier service by SingPost. Speedpost Express, which taps the delivery network of DHL Express, allows for shorter delivery time and pre-Customs clearance. Under the new service, the delivery times for popular destinations such as Malaysia, Hong Kong and China are on average one to two days faster than other courier services currently provided by SingPost.

FedEx Express to acquire express business of Chinese transportation company DTW Group

FedEx Corporation announced today that its FedEx Express unit had signed an agreement with Tianjin Datian W. Group Co., Ltd. (“DTW Group”) to acquire DTW Group’s 50 percent share of the FedEx-DTW International Priority express joint venture and DTW Group’s domestic express network in China for USD400 million. FedEx and DTW Group entered into a joint venture agreement in 1999. JPMorgan acted as exclusive financial advisor to FedEx. PricewaterhouseCoopers acted as exclusive financial advisor to DTW Group. The acquisition will include: DTW Group’s 50 percent share in the International Priority express joint venture, converting the joint venture into a wholly FedEx-owned company; the DTW Group assets used to perform International Priority services; and DTW Group domestic express assets from 89 DTW Group locations.
