Japan Post to enter parcel delivery service for frozen food

Japan Post will start testing a parcel delivery service for frozen food in Kyushu this month through a tie-up with Nippon Express Co. ahead of the scheduled launch of a nationwide service later this year, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Saturday. During the three-month trial, Japan Post will accept parcels whose senders and receivers are both located in the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan, the report said, adding Nippon Express will pick up, store and deliver parcels weighing less than 4 kilograms on behalf of Japan Post.

FedEx Thailand opens office close to new airport

FedEx has opened a new service centre close to Suvarnabhumi Airport, to serve customers in eastern Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi and Rayong provinces and the heavy industrial areas of the Eastern Seaboard, The Nation reports. “This is probably the biggest centre in Thailand, compared to those of other international express transport companies,” said David J Ross, FedEx vice president for South Pacific. The centre is located on King Kaew Road, about 10 minutes from the new airport. It provides 500 per cent more space than FedEx’s old facilities.

UPS` retail franchise plans in India face roadblock

United Parcel Services (UPS), which plans to set up a network of retail franchise shops in the country under the brand name UPS Stores, may find the going tough. The company’s plans are likely to get stalled with the Centre’s recent reluctance to allow foreign direct investment in retail. A section of the government does see it as an attempt to gain an indirect entry into retail. Besides, the department of posts has objected to UPS’ proposal, viewing it as a violation of the Indian Postal Act, which reserves the mail delivery system as a government function.

China Post weighing far-reaching reforms

An official of the State Postal Bureau of China, disclosed on June 20 that a far-reaching postal reform solution had been submitted to the State Council, the nation’s cabinet, for approval. The SPB – a government agency and a utility which administers the postal industry and manages postal services nationwide – plans to divide the postal industry into four segments: state-controlled postal services, logistics and express services, private document services, and financial services such as insurance and savings. In addition, it is scheduled to guide independent companies to run the last three segments. Guan Rongshun, general manager of China Postal Airlines Ltd., an airfreight and mail company, said in an interview that a consolidation between the logistics and express businesses was in process – China Post Logistics Co., Ltd. (CNPL) and Express Mail Service (EMS) would be merged within the second half of 2005.

TNT Japan secures inbound logistics contract with Mitsubishi Motors

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan (MMC) has selected TNT in Japan as its Lead Logistics Partner for its inbound logistics processes of non-powertrain components sourced from overseas suppliers. The contract is valued at 10 million Euro over 3 years. As part of the new agreement, TNT Japan will be responsible for all aspects of the inbound supply chain including distribution of purchase orders to MMC suppliers, door to door movement of components from suppliers in Asia, Europe and the America’s to TNT managed distribution centres in Japan and final line-side delivery to 2 MMC plants in Japan.
