JAL, ANA made same bids for Japan Post contracts

Japan Airlines Corp. and All Nippon Airways Co. made the same bids for Japan Post’s mail container service contracts in 115 rounds of open competitive tenders in last February, informed sources said Wednesday. This was “unusual,” said a source. But a JAL official denied the two carriers colluded to rig bids. Japan Post conducted 234 rounds of open tenders in last February for contracts in all of fiscal 2004, which started April 1. JAL and ANA, Japan’s two major air carriers, were invited to participate along with Skymark Airlines, a relative newcomer in the industry founded in 1996. JAL and ANA eventually participated in 143 rounds, including the 115 rounds in which they offered exactly same prices, the sources said.

Koizumi resolved to privatize Japan Post from April 2007

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi expressed determination on Saturday to begin the process of privatizing the state-backed Japan Post in April 2007. While noting that Japan will be in a critical stage for achieving a successful outcome of his reform policy, Koizumi said in a written New Year’s statement that he is “resolved to privatize Japan Post” from April 2007. He also reiterated his hope that the Diet will pass a set of bills to privatize Japan Post during its next ordinary session to begin in January. Under the government plan, Japan Post will be split into four entities in charge of mail delivery, postal savings, postal insurance and post office management, all under a new holding company, when the 10-year process begins in April 2007.

FedEx, Datian split in China denied

FedEx Express and Tianjin Datian W Group have denied rumours that the two parties will soon suspend their co-operation in China’s international fast delivery market. Foreign express firms may not necessarily seek fully-owned subsidiaries right after the nation opens its express market, according to experts. “So far we are not prepared to make any changes in our business modes in China,” FedEx said in a media statement last week. FedEx, the world’s largest express transportation carrier, is rumoured to be on the brink of seeking a controlling stake in the joint venture with its Chinese partner Datian Group. That indicates FedEx will probably end its co-operation with Datian and later run express services through its subsidiaries as China fully opens its express market in the next year.

[QQ] It has been five years since Roger Pritchard took up his post in this country. During that time the most memorable event for him as country manager of DHL Vietnam has been the signing of the Vietnam-U.S. bilateral trade agreement. “One of my lasting memories will be the ratification of the BTA in December three years ago.” As Pritchard puts it, the agreement has not only turned the United States into Vietnam’s biggest trading partner only after two years but has also made a big difference to DHL’s business in Vietnam.
