SingPost to offer financial planning services and products at its branches

Postal services provider Singapore Post is continuing its diversification into financial products and services. SingPost has just signed an agreement to establish an exclusive life insurance distribution partnership with UK insurance giant Prudential. The new service “Care for Life” will sell affordable and comprehensive life insurance policies. For a start, full-time financial consultants from Prudential will be stationed at 10 designated post offices. Eventually, the service will be expanded to every post office around the island.

Japan PM to press ahead with controversial postal reform

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reiterated Tuesday the need for planned controversial post office reforms despite differences within his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Koizumi’s pet project to privatize the national postal service has divided the ruling party because his plan risks offending the one million Japan Post workers who traditionally have voted for the LDP.
“With no reform, we will see no growth. Reform is necessary in any era,” Koizumi told an annual convention of the party, which has ruled Japan almost continuously since it was founded about 50 years ago. “The LDP must continue to push for reform by going back to our founding principle that we are a national party that seeks prosperity of the entire Japanese public,” he said.

Singapore Post announces appointment of group CEO

Singapore Post Ltd today announced the appointment of Lau Boon Tuan as group chief executive officer with effect from February 1, 2005. The company also said that Tan Soo Hock will remain as chief executive officer. Tan will take charge of the postal business as well as the philatelic and stamps business, said Singapore Post.

Deutsche Post CEO to start talks over Japanese govt’s mail company

Deutsche Post World Net AG is interested in Japan’s state-owned mail service Yubin, which the Japanese government is set to sell into private hands in 2007, Focus magazine said in a report to be published tomorrow, citing no sources.
The magazine said Deutsche Post’s chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel is traveling to Japan to initialise talks with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the beginning of next week. It also said Deutsche Post is already in talks with Yubin over a possible cooperation.

UK, Netherlands to Discuss Japan Post Reform

Postal services privatization minister Heizo Takenaka said Friday he will visit Britain and the Netherlands from Sunday to hold talks with postal officials in the two European countries where postal services have been privatized. “In major European countries, the postal privatization process is going on, spurring competition,” Takenaka told a press conference after a Cabinet meeting. “I will meet with government leaders there and exchange opinions.” In Britain, the minister is scheduled to meet with Nigel Stapleton, chairman of Britain’s Postal Service Commission which is the independent regulator for postal services in the country. In the Netherlands, he will talk with Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Laurens Brinkhorst and Peter Bakker, chief executive officer of TPG N.V.
