APL losses for 2002 ‘Worse then expected’

Japanese post offices set to sell envelopes

The Asahi Shimbun The Postal Services Agency says it will begin selling envelopes at post offices in and around Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in April. The move is aimed at boosting the profitability of the postal mail business, which will be transferred to a new public postal corporation to be established on April 1. The agency had refrained from selling mail-related goods at post offices, citing a desire to steer clear of criticism it was muscling in on the business of stationery shops and other private businesses

Lawson stores to handle mail service in Japan

The Postal Services Agency announced Thursday that it will install postal boxes at Lawson convenience stores across Japan where domestic and international mail will be accepted for delivery. The service, which will initially start at Lawson stores in urban localities, will begin Jan. 1, 2003. There are approximately 7,600 Lawson stores nationwide.

Potential for India Post in offering financial services

Global experience shows that financial services contribute 40-80 per cent of the revenues of the postal departments, according to Mr Hans Boon, vice president ING(FI I&GA), Head of PostBank International Consultancy. “Financial services sector is currently growing at a faster pace while growth in business from mail services is more or less dependent on the growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP) of a country,” he said.
