China Express Dispute Continues

The deadline for resolving a months-long dispute pitting China’s postal monopoly against foreign express delivery giants has been extended to mid-August, the world’s biggest express carrier FedEx said on Monday. The spat, centred around proposed restrictions on express services that would hand the state monopoly a competitive edge during China’s first year in the WTO, previously faced a June 15 deadline, when the thorny new rules were to have taken effect. ‘I understand from unofficial sources that the submission date has been extended to mid-August,’ a Fedex spokeswoman said in a statement to Reuters. ‘We remain confident that this issue will be resolved to the benefit of our customers in China.’

China Southern Air Acquires Stake in Postal Air

China Southern Airlines Co. (ZNH) is to acquire a 49% stake in China Postal Airlines for 150 million yuan [U.S.$18.1 million] (US$1=CNY8.28), a company source said Monday. The source said the two parties are to sign an agreement in Beijing Tuesday. China Southern Airlines expects to fund the acquisition with internal resources, the source said. The deal is pending Chinese government approval, the source said. China Postal Airlines, which is controlled by the State Postal Bureau of China, provides mail and parcel shipment services for mainland post offices.

Japan's Post Office Mail-delivery ops set to move into black

The public post office’s mail-delivery service is expected to move into the black for the year through March 31, after having suffered losses in the previous two years, Hiroshi Matsui, director general of the Postal Services Agency, said Friday.
“The balance sheet (for mail services) dramatically improved (in fiscal 2001),” Matsui said at a press conference.
The bullish projection was attributed to cost-cuts and revenue from profitable advertisement delivery, including direct mailings.

UPS intra-Asia volume up 19%

United Parcel Service said it has seen its intra-Asia volume rise almost 19% since it opened a regional hub in the Philippines in April.
The new network, based at the former Clark Air Force Base, connects nine major Asian markets with overnight delivery service.

Japan's Yamato Transport: Cheaper Mail Delivery?

Yamato Transport Co. (J.YMT or 9064) is considering introducing by next April a cheaper mail delivery service to rival Japan’s public postal service, a company spokesman said Friday. Though the company has not finalized details of the new service, it hopes to revise its fee system and introduce a cheaper service that can compete with the Y80-a-letter delivery fee charged by Japan’s public post offices, the official said. Currently Yamato’s lowest mail service fee is Y160 for the delivery of catalogs, brochures and magazines.
