Osterreichische Post unveils closure blacklist

Osterreichische Post AG, the Austrian postal service company, has unveiled the 666 offices it is looking to close. This is a scaled-down version of the original 712 offices it had chosen to shut.

It is believed that there is an agreement between the company and the Land of Carinthia, under which all its offices are to remain open until at least January 2004.

EUROPE IN DEADLOCK ON POSTAL LIBERALISATION

The long-standing dispute over the future of Europe’s postal markets reaches a climax tomorrow at a council of EU telecommunications ministers in Luxembourg. EU leaders meeting in Lisbon in March 2000 all agreed to liberalise their markets in a bid to make the European economy more dynamic and competitive.
Belgium, which currently holds the EU presidency, is trying to cobble together a deal which would open 20 per cent of the postal markets to competition in 2006, compared to the present 3 per cent.

Austrian Post Office may cut 300 jobs

Austria’s postal workers’ union is demanding that Osterreichische Post AG, the Austrian post office, refrain from redundancies, amid fears that 300 redundancies could result from the planned closure of around 700 post offices. Regional post office directors have this week sent news of the planned closures to those who will be affected. However, it is said that concrete measures can be taken only in agreement with representatives of municipalities.

Caution may pay off for Austria Post

The head of Austria Post’s new technologies Walter Trezek claims Austria Post hasn’t lost out by being slow to run with the Internet or launch e-commerce projects.

Compared to the US Postal Service, Canada Post, Swiss Post or Deutsche Post that have already launched an array of online services, Austria Post has indeed been slow to get out of the gate.
