Boeing to supply six 767 freighters to re-fleet DHL U.S. Operations

Boeing and DHL agreed on an order for six 767-300ER (Extended Range) Freighters. This order has previously been accounted for on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries Website.
“Adding the wide-body 767 Freighter to our network allows us to grow our business considerably,” said John Mullen, CEO DHL Express. “This acquisition will support the DHL Express strategy with particular emphasis on renewing and updating the network supporting operations that serve the U.S. market.” DHL has successfully established a solid number 3 market position in the U.S. and is striving to expand its overall leadership in the global express business.

FedEx delivers more new jobs to ST Mobile Aerospace Engineering

More evidence that Mobile is growing as a hub for the aerospace industry came with the happy announcement that ST Mobile Aerospace Engineering Inc. and FedEx Express Corp. will convert 87 passenger jets to air freighters at Brookley Field.
Immediately, that means 200 new jobs — good jobs, paying an average of USD14 to USD18 an hour. Over time, the seven-year USD470 million contract with FedEx will solidify MAE’s status as Mobile County’s largest employer and its position as a major player in the Mobile economy.
The contract is to convert Boeing 757 passenger planes to freighters to replace about 110 Boeing 727s currently used by FedEx. MAE expects to turn out about one freighter per month when production gets under way in May.

Korean Air orders 25 Boeing aircraft for 5.5 billion dollars

Korean Air Tuesday announced a 5.5 billion dollar order for 25 Boeing passenger and freight aircraft, the biggest deal in South Korean aviation history and a fresh setback for European rival Airbus.

The nation’s leading flag carrier said in a statement it would buy 10 777-300ER (Extended Range) planes, four 737-900ER and one 737-700, five 747-8 Freighters and five 777-200 Freighters.

It also has options for four 777-300ER, two 747-8F and two 737-900ER.

Delivery of the aircraft is scheduled for between 2009 and 2019.

The transaction is the biggest aircraft order in Korea’s aviation history in terms of the number of planes and the purchase price, said spokesman Shin Jin-Chul.

Korean Air said it aims to maintain its position as the world’s number one commercial cargo carrier, which it has held for the past two years, and to become one of the world’s top 10 passenger carriers by 2010.

Cargo jets carry some risks along with shipments – Group boosts effort to educate senders about unsafe packages

A woman walked into Bruce Bernstein’s Pompano Beach, Fla., parcel shipping store with a box that she said had to arrive before July 4th. Inside were 28 pounds of fireworks, bottle rockets and illegal, high-powered firecrackers known as M-80s.

“It would have taken down a plane no problem,” says Bernstein, recalling an incident from two summers ago that underscores the difficulties private shippers have with keeping hazardous materials off planes.

The Associated Mail and Parcel Centers, which represents over 3,000 small shipping centers, estimates that each year thousands of packages like this one slip unnoticed onto planes all over the USA. The leading industry trade group and the government have stepped up efforts to educate the public about shipping flammable goods.

The rapid growth in shipments has made it increasingly difficult to police what goes into packages that crisscross the nation, the association says. Its members are small stores that pack items and funnel packages to the large shipping companies. They handle 29 million packages a year.

FedEx drops Airbus order and goes with Boeing

FedEx Express, which is based in Memphis, Tenn., canceled its order for 10 Airbus A380 superjumbo jets and went with 15 Boeing 777 long-range aircraft.

The FedEx Corp. Tuesday said in a statement that “significant delays” in the A380 deliveries prompted the shift to the U.S. aeronautics giant.

Besides ordering 15 airborne freighters, each of which carries a list price of around USD236 million, FedEx also obtained an option for another 15 Boeing 777 aircraft.

“The availability and delivery timing of this aircraft, coupled with its attractive payload range and economics, make this choice the best decision for FedEx, its customers, shareowners and employees,” said FedEx Chief Executive Frederick Smith.

FedEx Express continues to be Airbus’ largest wide-body airplane customer and will add new and used Airbus wide-body aircraft to its fleet. Six new A300-600 aircraft are scheduled to join the FedEx fleet in 2007.

The 777 is the world’s largest twin-engine cargo aircraft with a range of more than 6,100 nautical miles and a revenue payload capacity of 171,000 pounds. FedEx expects to take delivery of four of the 777 aircraft in calendar year 2009, eight in 2010 and the remaining three in 2011.
