Study: Our lives in digital times

Digital technology did not create “the paperless society” that many had predicted, at least not yet, but it does have people communicating more than ever, according to a new assessment of the impact of information and communications technologies (ICTs).

The study, published today in the Connectedness Series, examines some of the expected outcomes expressed about the widespread use of ICTs in everyday life when these technologies were introduced, and shows that some of them have so far not materialized.

It finds that some of the key outcomes of ICTs are manifested in shifting behavioural patterns, including communication and spending. For example, patterns of communication are changing and people are talking on the phone and using email more than they ever have.

The arrival of the personal computer gave much talk to the “paperless office”. However, between 1983 and 2003, consumption of paper for printing and writing alone more than doubled, according to the study, entitled “Our lives in digital times”.

Canada's mail carriers to use own cars?

Canada Post has sent a letter to the union representing its employees suggesting mail carriers be given the choice of using their personal vehicles on their routes to deliver mail, Radio-Canada reported Monday.

Use of personal vehicles already goes on but that flies in the face of the mail carriers’ current contract, which forbids them from transporting mail sacks to local grey pickup boxes or carrying mail in their cars.

Canada Post wants the mail carriers to be able to transport the mail in their vehicles, saying it would better enable them to compete with courier companies such as FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. and boost productivity.

However, the union fears that 1,000 jobs could be lost if the current system of having mail trucks transport the mail is curtailed.

Canada Post Introduces New Stamp with Lasting Appeal! Pennywise Canadians to benefit from new PERMANENT tm stamp

Canada Post today announced the introduction of a new non-denominated stamp that will retain its value forever. The PERMANENT™ stamp will be accepted at the basic domestic Lettermail rate and replaces next year’s 52¢ domestic rate definitive stamps. The PERMANENT stamp will eliminate the need to purchase 1¢ stamps after a rate increase, doing away with the need for Canadians to worry about ‘using up’ postage stamps before a rate increase takes effect.

“The PERMANENT stamp will make doing business with Canada Post that much easier,” said Moya Greene, president and CEO of Canada Post. “Canadians can easily be pennywise with this customer-responsive initiative from Canada Post.”

Canada Post sets new rules for mailing goods: Foreign destinations

What’s the difference between putting a letter and a
CD in a mailbox? If you’re Canada Post, as much as a few dollars.

T-shirts and other “non-paper” items to the United States and other
foreign destinations in envelopes that are meant only for paper.

It has developed a new “light-packet” system designed exclusively
for non-paper goods and is expected to announce details of the new
system today.

Changes will take effect on Aug. 21.
