Rural mail carriers say Canada Post overreacted by closing mailboxes

A union representative for rural mail carriers says Canada Post overreacted by suspending service to thousands of country mailboxes because of health and safety issues. Heather Manuel, health and safety representative for rural and suburban mail carriers in the Fredericton area, said Wednesday rural route drivers feel they are being unfairly blamed by residents who are furious about the sudden loss of home delivery. Rural Canadians prepare to stamp on Canada Post

Following a wave of public condemnation, Canada Post officials will hold public information sessions this week to discuss their reasons for suddenly stopping individual mailbox delivery in a number of rural areas. Canada Post spokeswoman Avril Vollenhoven said Monday that, so far, service has been suspended to 53,000 mailboxes across Canada as the corporation embarks on a health and safety review of rural delivery. The workers say they are suffering repetitive stress injuries from reaching into mailboxes. As well, there are concerns about heavy traffic on some roads. But rural residents say they’re fed up with Canada Post’s decision to stop delivery to the mailboxes, pending a review of its entire rural delivery system. Many are eager to make that point in meetings scheduled for this week in four separate communities.

Some New Brunswick residents, including seniors and people with disabilities, were told by Canada Post on Tuesday they will have to make 40-kilometre round trips to get their mail. The corporation said this week it is reviewing its entire rural mail service following complaints from the unionized workers who deliver the mail. The workers say they are suffering repetitive stress injuries from reaching into mailboxes. As well, there are concerns about heavy traffic on some roads. Rural service in a number of communities across Canada already has been suspended, including several communities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. But residents are complaining that Canada Post made the decision without putting practical alternatives in place.

“In spite of its success, Canada Post used the 2005 annual report as an opportunity to suggest that our public post office is in trouble and needs to be more profitable,” said CUPW President Deborah Bourque.
