Canada Post has quietly stopped picking up mail through the weekend at thousands of sidewalk postal boxes across the country. Letters left in the boxes on a Friday will sit until the following Monday, but a spokesman insists the change does not affect Canada Post standards for quick delivery within Canada. “We don’t need to clear these boxes because there’s low volume and we can collect it on Monday and still meet the service standard, so it’s not a
problem,” John Caines said yesterday. He added stickers have been placed on the red boxes warning anyone dropping letters in on Friday afternoon that the mail will not be picked up until Monday. Canada Post standards call for letters to be delivered within two days of mailing for local destinations, within three days for destinations within a province and within four days anywhere in Canada.

street boxes in some urban areas, but spokesman John Caines said the
move won’t affect delivery times.

The changes, which came into effect July 3, affect about 11,500
street boxes across Canada serviced by about 194 contractors, he
said.
