Canada Post trims weekend street box pickup
Canada Post has eliminated Saturday pickup of mail from
street boxes in some urban areas, but spokesman John Caines said the
move won’t affect delivery times.
The changes, which came into effect July 3, affect about 11,500
street boxes across Canada serviced by about 194 contractors, he
said.
A combination of process improvements and technology innovations
means Canada Post can still maintain the same service without
picking up this mail on weekends, Mr. Caines said.
“It’s cost reduction for us and it doesn’t affect delivery of the
mail,” he said.
“We’ve gone to five-day processing of mail posted on these sites,
so there’s no reason to pick up mail on the weekend.”
No announcement was made because not all street box pickup
schedules were changed, Mr. Caines said. The post office put notices
on those that did.
The changes in pickup schedules also helped reduce emissions from
vehicles, he added.
