Following eight months of intense negotiations, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has reached two milestone agreements with Canada Post Corporation (CPC).

These are two very historic agreements for CUPW and Canada Post, said Deborah Bourque, National President of the CUPW.

This four-year agreement for the 48,000 postal workers strengthens job security by contracting-in parcels. It ensures economic security with a wage increase of 3% per year that is protected by a cost of living allowance, and enhances the overall rights and benefits for our members, said Bourque.

CUPW has obtained very important health and safety improvements for its members. There will be an injection of money each year towards health and safety training, studies and the elimination of workplace hazards. Through pilot projects, CUPW members will see an increase in daytime work and a new four-day workweek for night workers. Currently, postal workers have the second highest injury rate in the federal sector. Letter carriers have an injury rate that is five times higher than the Canadian average.

Canada Post and its postal workers union reached a deal early Wednesday on a settlement framework for a contract, avoiding a national strike or lockout of thousands of corporation employees.

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have agreed to finalize a tentative agreement in the next 72 hours.

The agreement on the framework came about 3 1/2 hours after the third deadline extension had elapsed.

Negotiations on a new contract for Canada’s postal workers continued past a midnight strike deadline into early Friday after the federal postal service made a new offer.

Deborah Bourque, president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, said the offer fell short of the basis for a tentative agreement, but called it “a sign that Canada Post may be taking negotiations seriously.”

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers plans to go on strike just after midnight Thursday to demand for better job security and increase of wages, it is reported Thursday.

The 45,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been without a contract since Jan. 31. Last month, 92 percent of postal workers voted in favor of a strike mandate over issues including salaries, subcontracting, retirement, work load and safety.
