Ottawa claims UPS lawsuit under NAFTA has narrowed

UPS will be allowed to continue its $230-million NAFTA case over what it says are unfair business practices by Canada Post Corp., but a tribunal threw out parts of the claim yesterday. United Parcel Service says it will retool the complaint and keep the entire case alive, while government officials said they believe the tribunal decision significantly narrows the grounds on which UPS can proceed.

Canada Post; Private-Sector Interference

In May 2001, government-owned Canada Post acquired 50 per cent of Montreal’s Intelcom Courier for $1 million. This company offers same-day courier service to businesses and individuals.

Canada Post is now planning to increase its presence and establish same-day courier services in cities across Canada. John Caines, a company spokesman, recently told the media that the expansion of the Crown corporation into same-day courier service is “where we’re going,” and they do not plan to back down from this strategy.

Couriers right to go postal

we haven’t yet reached the point where posties on bikes are delivering rush envelopes downtown. But that day might come sooner than you think. Canada Post has purchased a 50-per-cent interest in Montreal-based Intelcom, one of the largest rush couriers in the city. The deal has competitors seeing red. Stories have been flying around Montreal and Toronto about Canada Post pressuring some of its big suppliers, like law firms and advertising companies, to drop their current couriers and use Intelcom.
