UK businesses to pay postage online

Companies will be able to buy postage over the internet under a pilot scheme unveiled by Royal Mail (RM) yesterday. According to RM, the new service will be available to “selected customers” in January and February next year, and will be extended in the autumn if it is successful. Gillian Wilmot, managing director of mail markets, said: “We want customers to have a choice about how they access our products and services in a way that best suits them.”

USPS unveils electronic stamp they plan to sell to certify authenticity and delivery time of emails. The technology, called “electronic postmarks,” will not necessarily end the era of free e-mail. But it does create a “first-class” version with a small delivery charge. The postmarks are likely to be used to transmit sensitive documents, for instance, to authenticate the sender and reassure the recipient.

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, has announced that it is to continue operating its loss-making digital signature subsidiary Signtrust. It had been due to withdraw entirely from the business, as announced at the end of May, but it will now remain in operation.
