DHL forecasts 20% growth in Chile in 2004

DHL Express projects operations in Chile will rise 20% this year, well above the worldwide company average of 13 reports Marketing Manager Ricardo Norambuena.

The new growth is a result of Chile’s decision to adhere to its free trade treaty with the U.S., and DHL developed new services and products supported by the agreement. DHL also has broadened services to include purchase orders for exporters.

FedEx expands tests of U.S. mail deliveries

FedEx has said it is broadening tests of a low-cost parcel service using U.S. mail carriers for home deliveries. The test, announced Jan. 23, comes as the Memphis-based company looks to expand its ground business.

Rival United Parcel Service earlier introduced a lower-cost service for large commercial customers shipping to rural and other thinly populated destinations.

Japanese Nippon Express hoping to start special mail delivery service

Major transport company Nippon Express Co. plans to launch a special mail delivery service, possibly within 2004, informed sources said.

The company has already submitted an application for a business license to the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, which may approve it.

Nippon Express would become the first major transport firm to begin special mail deliveries since April last year when the government allowed private firms to handle mail delivery on certain conditions, including delivery within three hours.

UPS Sued for franchise violations by coalition of Mail Boxes Etc owners

A national alliance of nearly 200 Mail Boxes Etc. stores, under the auspices of a nonprofit support and advocacy group called the Platinum Shield Association, are now locked in two California lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court with parent company United Parcel Service-Mail Boxes Etc. The plaintiffs in the current lawsuit are a group of storeowners who refused to convert to UPS stores and contend that UPS used high-pressure and questionable sales tactics on storeowners to sign the Gold Shield Program contract. Plaintiffs also claim that UPS pressured thousands of Mail Boxes Etc. franchisees to become UPS stores under contracts that are in violation of franchise laws, because they lacked appropriate and adequate disclosure information.
