Hogan hoping to deliver for DHL UK people

Deutsche Post World Net, the owners of DHL, have a new managing director of DHL UK. Irish-born John Hogan will be stepping into the new role immediately. The move follows Deutsche’s purchase of the remainder of Securicor Omega Holdings, allowing DHL UK to join DPWN’s European network. Mr Hogan, who joined Securicor Omega Express in 1987, will be responsible for DHL’s UK and Irish business.

TPG calls for Brussels probe over La Poste postal services

TPG, the Dutch mail and logistics group, has complained to the European Commission that the French government is distorting competition in the postal sector by favouring La Poste, the state-owned French company. TPG alleges that Paris has discriminated against new entrants in the French express delivery market by harassing them for their use of subcontractors while taking no similar action against La Poste. Under European Union rules, the Commission is duty-bound to look into such complaints. If it found that the French government had broken single-market rules or granted illegal state aid, it could order Paris to change its behaviour.

UPS abandons Hong Kong for Shanghai

United Parcel Service (UPS), one of the world’s top 500 companies, is to move its Asian regional headquarters from Hong Kong to Shanghai, state press said Friday. The move is primarily due to an increasing number of clients on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Daily reported, quoting Perry Chao, UPS’ China senior vice-president. “With many of our customers, especially electronics companies, setting up plants in the Yangtze River delta, we found this region contributed a significant share to the growth of our China revenue,” Chao said.

DHL Express unveils DHL Ya program for cash customers

DHL Express announced the successful results of its Customer Cash Stimulation Program called DHL Ya. The initiative is being developed across Latin America with the purpose of providing additional benefits to its cash consumers. The programme recognizes DHL’s cash customers’ loyalty with prizes and gifts such as calculators, cameras, CD players and PDAs, among others. When customers come into the Express Center, they fill out a survey and receive a loyalty card that they bring back every time they ship to receive prizes.

The Willenhall company’s vehicles carry about 18 per cent of the IDW market, worth more than pounds 325 million annually. Things of irregular dimension and weight -ladders, DIY goods, fencing, furniture, bicycles and garden equipment among them -are not the sort of manufactured goods that many carriers want to deliver. When Robert Kelly, Nightfreight’s chief executive, led the buyout of the business two and a half years ago with the help of venture capital provided by Barclays Private Equity, which owns 80 per cent of the business through its shareholding, it was quickly recognised that the IDW sector could be lucrative.
