Shippers prepare for the seasonal rush of packages

UPS plans to ramp up its Inland Empire operations for the shopping season.

The package shipper will hire 900 additional workers for its San Bernardino, Ontario, Riverside, Temecula, Barstow, Blythe, Victorville and Yucca Valley operations, UPS spokeswoman Page Dossey said.

DHL will deliver more than 2 million packages on its peak day in the United States, Dec. 20.

DHL hired hundreds of part-time package handlers to help meet the holiday demand, said John Cameron, DHL USA executive vice president of operations, in a Nov. 21 release. DHL added 300 daily truck routes and 63 new domestic flights a week to its regular network schedules for the holiday rush.

DHL employs 300 people at its 262,000 square-foot, USD70 million West Coast distribution center located at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside.

FedEx will extend employee hours to meet the holiday package delivery demand, spokesman Matt Ceniceros said in a previous interview.

FedEx likely will hire a small number of temporary package handlers for its ground operations to meet the holiday demand, he said.

Headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., FedEx employs more than 260,000 people.

FedEx will handle 9.8 million packages on Dec. 18. That will be the most packages FedEx has handled on a single day since it was founded in 1973.

Shanghai, Inchon Vie for Location of DHL Hub

DHL has chosen the Chinese city Shanghai and Inchon in South Korea as the shortlists for the location of its hub for North Asia region.

The hub, which will need an investment of tens of millions of euros, will become the third one for the company in Asia in the wake of that located in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Jerry Hsu said that DHL is now expanding rapidly in Asia, thus it considers establishing a hub in the North Asia region. After completion, it will mainly cover the markets in China, Japan and South Korea as well as other areas in North Asia.

Scott Price, chief executive officer for DHL Express Asia Pacific, revealed that Shanghai and Inchon are geographically close to each other and both has hub airport with a rather large amount of imports and exports of freight. Therefore, DHL will give priority to cost factors, including land, labor force, tax and speed of custom clearance.

In addition, the development focus and routes of its partners like Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Hong Kong’s flag carrier, over the future ten years are also the factors DHL will take into account.

DHL weighs location of North Asia hub

DHL recognises fast growth in Asia and is considering construction of a hub in the north of the region.

Shanghai or Inchon will be selected as the express hub of north Asia in the coming three months, said Jerry Hsu, president for DHL Greater China.

The hub will be built up with multi-hundred million Euros, and it will become the third DHL hub in Asia besides that in Hong Kong and Singapore after completion.

In August this year, DHL entered into a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai Airport (Group) Co., indicating the intention of building the hub there. However, the final decision will be made based on examination and review on the two cities.

DHL Asia Pacific CEO Scott Price showed that airline partners’ development orientation for the following decade is a significant factor for the decision making in addition to costs of land, labor, taxation and clearance.

Dubai Custom works with DHL to create groundbreaking integration solution

Dubai Custom and DHL today officially announced the launch of an integration solution to facilitate a faster clearance process of global import consignments in the UAE.

The revolutionary system incorporates Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), which allows express and logistics companies to send shipment information electronically and receive Customs clearance within minutes.

Commenting on the launch, Bachi Spiga, DHL Area Operations Director Middle East, said:

‘The implementation of this integration solution will provide total customs-clearance and real-time visibility into regional and global trade processes.’

‘Unless there is a need to seek clarification, all transactions will be cleared on the same day. Customs automated feedback over declaration of inbound shipments indicates three possibilities; cleared, on hold or failed depending on the individual status,’ said Mohammed Al Rasasi, Project Manager, Dubai Customs.
