FedEx, UPS subpoenaed in US cargo probe

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. said on Friday they received grand jury subpoenas as part of a global probe by the U.S. government into possible criminal violations of antitrust laws in the air cargo transportation industry.

The U.S. package delivery companies said they do not believe they are targets of the investigation, which has drawn in Air France-KLM, British Airways Plc, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Scandinavian airline SAS, Luxembourg-based Cargolux Airlines International and Air Canada’s parent, ACE Aviation Holdings Inc.

Fedex's Qingdao Branch starts operation

Fedex announced on July 12 that the company’s Qingdao Branch has put into operation to satisfy the rising international express service in Qingdao, a port city in east China’s Shandong Province’.

So far, Fedex has 26 branches, 38 ground workstations as well as three ports in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen cities and its service now covers 200 cities in China.

According to the plan, Fedex will extend its service network to another 100 Chinese cities in the coming five years.

New scanners for GLS Polish couriers and branches

GLS Poland has invested €2 million on some 800 new scanners for its couriers and branch offices in Eastern Europe’s largest express parcels market. Customers benefit from improved tracking options.

The hand-held data scanners, developed in cooperation with IBM and Symbol Technologies, enable GLS drivers to transmit shipment receipt data to the central system using Wireless LAN technology. The new scanners feature multi-coloured displays and high resolution cameras to record electronic signatures and also any damage to the shipment.

DHL will provide overnight delivery for GrowerFlowers’ fresh grown bouquets direct from greenhouses on the east and west coasts to customers throughout the US.Online floral sales are expected to consistently reach 1.75 billion USD by 2008.
