UPS awarded contract to fly US mail

UPS today announced it had been awarded a three-year contract by the US Postal Service (USPS) to provide domestic air transportation of primarily First Class and Priority Mail.

Under the agreement, UPS initially will provide airlift of First Class and Priority Mail volume each week to and from 98 cities.

The contract, which includes an option for one two-year extension, expands an existing relationship between UPS and the USPS under which the company provides airlift for mail transportation between 16 cities. The contract will take effect on July 1.

Statement from TNT on relationship with Japan Post

In reaction to articles in the Japanese Press, TNT makes the following statement: On October 31, 2005 TNT and Japan Post announced an intention to establish a joint venture in International Express. For TNT this joint venture would be an addition to its recent acquisition in China and start of a road based network in South East Asia and would form part of its overall strategy to build a leading position in the Asian Express market.

At this stage, parties have not been able to reach agreement on the joint venture; however, TNT continues to explore opportunities for cooperation with Japan Post, including alternative JV structures.

BIEK Study Results: German CEP market grew 7.5% in 2005

According to the latest annual study published by BIEK (the German international express association which represents the leading private express and parcels companies in Germany), the German CEP market (courier, express and parcels) grew by 7.2% in 2005. Highlights of the study findings include: Revenue growth outpaced volumes due to a higher proportion of premium shipments; Revenues in the German CEP market increased by 7.2% to EUR11.9 billion while volumes grew by 5.3% to 1.95 billion shipments; Strong growth of 7.5% in the number of premium domestic and international shipments; Average yield per shipment rose from EUR6 per item in 2004 to EUR6.11 per item in 2005 (mostly due to the growth of premium products); Total employment in the CEP industry increased by 4,000 to a total of 169,000.

EPA Unveils Unique Hydraulic Hybrid Diesel Delivery Truck with UPS, International Truck and Engine, Eaton and U.S. Army

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today unveiled the first-ever series hydraulic hybrid diesel urban delivery vehicle, which will provide dramatic improvements in fuel economy and in emission reductions. The development of the hydraulic hybrid is the result of a partnership between the EPA, U.S. Army, UPS, International Truck and Engine Corporation and Eaton Corporation.

FedEx Corp. net income increases 27% in fourth quarter; operating margin continues to rise

FedEx Corp. reported the following consolidated results for the fourth quarter:
revenue of USD 8.49 billion, up 10% from USD 7.72 billion the previous year, operating income of USD 927 million, up 25% from USD 740 million a year ago, operating margin of 10.9%, up from 9.6% the previous year and net income of USD 568 million, up 27% from last year’s USD 448 million. “FedEx posted record financial results in the fourth quarter and full year, as we ended our fiscal 2006 in an environment of solid economic growth in the US and in international markets,” said Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and chief executive officer. “We remain optimistic about the global economic environment for fiscal 2007 and our ability to effectively manage our business. We will remain firmly focused on making every customer experience outstanding, profitably growing our business and seeking new opportunities to serve our customers.”
