UK Royal Mail seeks alliance with American parcel giant

Two of the world’s biggest postal groups, Fedex Corporation and UPS, are in advanced negotiations to set up a groundbreaking European strategic alliance with Royal Mail. Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail, is still deciding which of the two potential American-owned partners to pick but it is thought he is close to creating a new company that could transform the financial prospects of the British mail group. Leighton did not reveal the talks with the two US postal giants — Fedex, which is capitalised at USD33 billion (GBP17.5 billion), and UPS, worth USD52 billion. He wants the European operations of Fedex or UPS to team up with Royal Mail’s General Logistics Systems. GLS runs a pan-European parcels business and is Royal Mail’s most profitable operation.

DHL Mexico completes chain rehabilitation

DHL Mexico announced on May 18, 2006, that it had successfully completed the rehabilitation and expansion of its chain nationwide. The project required an investment of 38 mln Mexican pesos (USD3.4 mln/2.65 mln euro). DHL Mexico said it plans to invest an additional 13 mln pesos (USD1.17 mln/912,200 euro) during the remainder of the year to further improve its outlets. The investment will increase the effectiveness of DHL Mexico’s operations and will also improve the company’s customer relationship management.

What’s more, China, the fastest growing market in the Asia-Pacific express and parcels delivery sector, is set to become the sixth largest express market in the world by 2010, provided it continues growing at an average of 20% per year.

GLS Ireland expands parcel shop network

On September 1st of last year, GLS Ireland opened the first parcel shops in its six depots. Since then, the network In Ireland has been expanded to approximately 40 locations – by the end of the year 2007 a total of 120 parcel drop points is planned. Shopping and handing in parcels at the same time: The GLS parcel shops offer private customers and commercial companies with a low consignment volume a practical and timesaving alternative to the state Postal Offices. “The concept has gained acceptance”, says Olaf Stüwe, Managing Director of GLS Ireland. “We are opening up to 10 additional drop
points per month.”

HMV fights sales dip with home delivery service

HMV is planning to roll out a store-to-door home delivery service to give shoppers in smaller stores access to its full range. The entertainment retailer has piloted the service in 20 outlets, but will expand the operation across its estate from August. The news is part of HMV’s fight-back strategy as it attempts to become a major multi-channel retailer and reverse its sales decline.
