DHL invests 100 million euros in Bremen

DHL is investing around 100 million euros in the logistical infrastructure at its Bremen location. In the course of these activities, about 400 new jobs will be created. The express and logistics provider, part of Deutsche Post World Net, is building a new parcel center and a new high rack warehouse. At the same time, existing logistics centers in Bremen will be extensively modernized. This was announced today at a press conference given by Dr. Peter Kruse, member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Post World Net responsible for the express business in Germany and Europe, together with Dr. Peter Gloystein, Mayor of Bremen and Senator for Finance and Ports. As Kruse explained: “Bremen will become one of the most modern locations within the DHL network. Our customers will benefit from further improvements in service quality.”

International express giants rush to Shenzhen market

The international express industry in Shenzhen, a city bordering on Hong Kong, has seen a booming prospect since some 30 home and international express companies including Fedex Express, DHL-Sinotrans, UPS, TNT, rushed to the local market.

The Shenzhen Airport has gradually become an international express logistics center in southern China, said Wang Huicheng, head of the Shenzhen Airport Customhouse.

The number of international expresses via the Shenzhen Airport Customs Monitoring Center totaled 18.899 million pieces last year, weighing 153,000 tons and valuing 10.65 billion yuan, ranking first in China for three consecutive years. UPS, one of the world’s four express giants, chartered airplanes in Shenzhen Airport for international express delivery for the first time starting from April 11, and it plans to have 24 flights a week. The takeoff of a chartered airplane means a keener competition among worlds express giants in Shenzhen.

Moving fast in the New Zealand courier business

Mark Thompson, chief executive of Express Couriers, is not going to disclose how much New Zealand’s biggest courier business makes, even if it is part state-owned.

The courier companies built up by NZ Post “courageously” disclosed much information about parcel movements to customers, he said. But he was not about to telegraph sales and profits to rivals including Freightways, Peter Baker Transport, Toll Priority and a host of small round-town couriers.

He did say, however, that Express Couriers was probably more than a couple of points ahead of Freightways in market share.

Freightways estimated it had 39 per cent of the nation’s express package market when it floated on the stock exchange, and that it and NZ Post together had 85 per cent. Freightways has since estimated that both have slightly more than 40 per cent, the state-owned operator being a couple of points ahead.

DHL given lead role in setting up GCC-wide Emirate

The Deutsche Post World Net subsidiary revealed that it had agreed to partner Dubai Customs in implementing the pilot programme that will lead to the full-blown GCC system. The Dubai project is expected to lead to full e-clearance in the Emirate within the next 18 months and the possibility that shipments could be cleared even before they enter port.

Phil Couchman, DHL’s Director for the Middle East, said: ‘We are in the process of helping to adapt the system to the needs of all of the GCC countries. Progress has been extremely promising.

DHL, the region’s leading express and logistics supplier, has announced that it will play an imperative role in the introduction of a GCC-wide system of digitalised e-clearance that will allow shipments to be cleared through customs within seconds.

Higher noon for SystemPlus

SystemPlus, the German-based road haulage alliance, has launched a new time-definite service with guaranteed delivery times in key European markets.
Since the start of April, the group has offered a noon delivery service in Denmark, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Other countries are in the pipeline. In Germany, noon and 10am services have been standard for several years.
