DPD in Lithuania and Poland

GeoPost acquired the Lithuanian high-capacity CEP service provider Baltic Logistic System on 1 September. The latter operates under the DPD/Bizpak brand. The partnership will assume a concrete form this month with the opening of a DPD distribution centre equipped with cutting edge technology in Vilnius. The facility – the first semi-automatic depot in the Baltic states – enables DPD and GeoPost to significantly raise efficiency, service quality in parcel handling and distribution.

Deutsche Post Global Mail to become DHL Global Mail

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, is planning to change the name of its international business with the delivery of letters. Until now, this area of the company’s business has operated under the name ‘Deutsche Post Global Mail’; in future, however, this will change to ‘DHL Global Mail’. The reason for the company’s decision is that the DHL brand is very well-known in international business, while an increasing number of competitors are using the word ‘Post’ in their brand name. Deutsche Post does not expect to be able to protect the word ‘Post’ as a brand.

TNT Logistics UK joins DLS for logistics bid

TNT Logistics UK, a business unit of the global logistics company TPG, has agreed with the shareholders of Defence Logistic Solutions (DLS) to take a 20 per cent shareholding in DLS, which is bidding for the UK MoD Defence Logistics Organisation’s Future Defence Supply Chain initiative, a programme to streamline logistics for the UK armed forces. TNT Logistics UK is providing a team of equipment and logistics specialists to the DLS team in bidding for FDSCi. The other shareholders are BAE Systems (now including Alvis; formerly a shareholder in their own right) and Westland Helicopters.

DHL makes US push, takes on rivals FedEx, UPS

DHL’s yellow and red delivery trucks are on the road as its USD1.2 billion investment in the United States gets rolling, but investors waiting for the company to make a dent in the businesses of its two major U.S. rivals may need to be patient.

DHL, the U.S. express and logistics business of Germany’s Deutsche Post AG, plans to have a U.S. ground network equal or better to its rivals FedEx and United Parcel Service by the end of 2005.

“We’ve decided to accelerate efforts and hit the ground harder, faster, sooner,” Richard Metzler, DHL America’s executive of vice president of marketing, said in an interview.
