UK mission in Rwanda introduces visa courier service

In response to customer concerns over the requirements for UK visa applications in Rwanda to travel to Uganda to submit their applications, the British Embassy in Kigali has introduced a UK visa courier service in Rwanda that will facilitate Rwandans wishing to travel to the UK have the visa applications processed without having to travel to Uganda.

Applicants will also have an electronic impression of fingerprints taken at the British Embassy so that a record of them can be attached to the visa application.

UPS Canada names new president

Glenn Rice, a 27-year veteran of United Parcel Service and a native of Cleveland who started out as a package car driver, has been promoted to president of UPS Canada.

He replaces Alan Gershenhorn, who will become UPS supply chain’s president of global transportation and shared services.

“With Canadian exports totalling 457.8 billion dollars in 2003, my primary focus will be continuing to drive the acceleration and development of UPS’s international and cross border business,” Rice said in a release.

Rice, who has a bachelor’s degree in business management, was once a district manager in UPS’s Ohio region and its Desert Mountain region. He was promoted in 1998 to manage UPS’s Alabama region and moved to Kansas in 2000 to oversee 18 company departments.

DHL ‘will have world-class infrastructure in India by 2005’

DHL, wholly owned by the world’s largest transport and logistics company, Bonn-based Deutsche Post World Net, is truly global. DHL’s network covers 120,000 destinations in more than 200 countries and territories, employing over 160,000 people,420 aircraft, and 75,000 vehicles. It has 36 hubs, 900 depots, 238 gateways and 5000 offices. DHL handles one billion shipments every year catering to the requirements of 4.2 million customers. In the Asia-Pacific region also DHL is the clear market leader. The size of business amounts to euro 3 billion on a customer base of 250,000. More than 40 million shipments and 623 million kg of freight and over 430,000 TEUs are handled through six hubs employing 20,000 employees, 5000 vehicles and 20 dedicated freighters. About 800 commercial flights are operated per day. Mr John Mullen, CEO of DHL Express in Asia Pacific, recently spoke to Business Line in Hong Kong.

DHL to open Abu Dhabi head office

Scheduled to open this autumn, the head office will cover 1,000 square metres and is centrally positioned on Airport Road opposite the Etisalat tower. It will provide Abu Dhabi customers with a dedicated customer service team and a convenient drop off and pick up point.

“Over the last year and a half we have experienced growth of over 118percent in the weight of outbound traffic from Abu Dhabi. In addition shipments over this period have grown by 37percent,” said David Wild, General Manager, DHL UAE. “Much of this demand has come from major corporate customers who have looked to us to fulfil their supply chain logistics challenges.
