Czech Post Office has ten rivals on local market

The Czech Post Office Ceska posta has ten rivals with permission to provide postal services on the Czech market, the Ministry of Transport and Communications has reported.

Postal services are provided by several courier services, as well as by multinational companies like TNT, DHL International or United parcel service.

While Ceska posta has to offer its services throughout the country, its rivals generally concentrate on profitable segments of the market, that is, services for the corporate sector or in towns, Ceska posta’s spokesman Ladislav Vancura said.

Last year, Ceska posta delivered 735.2 million letters, 23.8 million parcels, and 90 million bills.

It posted a gross profit of Kc743m on operating revenues of Kc14.5bn in 2001. The company runs 3,400 post offices and employs 39,600 people.

Although the structure of the post office will only undergo cosmetic structural changes in the near future, some fundamental shifts in the ways it does business are already being discussed, including bringing in private companies to deliver international mail and cashing in on its slowly developing digital communications network.
