Deutsche Post launch 2007 Mailing Competition

Deutsche Post and the Siegfried Vögele Institute will again award German advertising agencies for their outstanding creative performances in dialogue marketing with the “2007 Mailing Competition” (Mailing-Wettbewerb 2007). There are five categories in which the agencies can submit their most successful mailings from their 2006 portfolios until 2 March 2007.

As well as the categories “Standard Format”, “Open Format”, “Partially Addressed Mailings” and “Self-Advertising”, the category “Political Communication” has become increasingly important for effective dialogue with citizens. Governmental and non-governmental institutions can submit contributions to the “Political Communication” category.

The Mailing Competition has been a highly approved award throughout Germany for many years. In 2006 nearly 400 agencies participated submitting over 600 to win the Dialogue Award. In a preliminary round regional juries award a prize to up to three winners per category. These participate in the national finals with a renowned and expert jury, which will take place at the Siegfried Vögele Institute in Königstein/Taunus near Frankfurt. The criteria for evaluating entries are design and strategy; creative idea and its implementation; customized approach and campaign effectiveness.

Wincor Nixdorf reports Deutsche Post deal

Wincor Nixdorf will act as general contractor in equipping up to 20,000 counter positions at the branches of Deutsche Post and Postbank with new IT systems.

The solution package also includes a five-year maintenance agreement. The first branches will be equipped in the third quarter of 2007 and the overall project will be completed by 2008.

As part of the project, at least 125 front-end systems a day will be replaced and loaded before installation with Deutsche Post’s branch software. This is a demanding task: Deutsche Post is the postal services provider with the largest sales revenue in Europe, and its services are delivered to two to three million customers a day in Germany. Ongoing operations thus should be disrupted as little as possible by this refreshment of the IT landscape.

The all-around package of integrated individual components that Wincor Nixdorf offered played a crucial role in Deutsche Post’s decision. One particular factor was the total cost of ownership, i.e. the costs over the entire product lifecycle. Fujitsu Siemens Computers is the partner for supplying the personal computers and the configuration is rounded out by peripherals such as printers, monitors, scanners, etc.

As a result of this framework agreement, Wincor Nixdorf is taking on the general contractorship for a Deutsche Post project for the first time.

German ministers want to extend Deutsche Post's mail delivery monopoly

Germany’s social welfare minister Franz Muentefering and finance minister Peer Steinbrueck want to extend Deutsche Post AG’s mail delivery monopoly beyond the current Dec 31 2007 deadline, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported, citing unnamed sources.

In a pre-release of an article to appear in tomorrow’s edition, the newspaper wrote that Muentefering is concerned about Deutsche Post’s ability to compete against low-cost competitors that also pay lower wages to their staff.

A spokesman for the minister neither confirmed nor denied the report when contacted by the newspaper.

Sources within the Finance Ministry told the newspaper that Steinbrueck is concerned about Deutsche Post losing its monopoly while rivals in countries such as France and Italy are able to retain theirs.

The newspaper also said debate on the matter within the German government is expected to intensify within the coming weeks.

UK road haulage market update

The road haulage industry is a vital part of the UK’s freight-transportation system, although it is a mature market and one that has little real growth potential. This is demonstrated by the fact that, in 2005, the volume of goods lifted by road by GB-registered goods vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes in Great Britain increased by 0.1% to 1.75 billion tonnes, while the volume of goods moved by road increased by 0.3%, to 152.7 billion tonne kilometres.

Advances in vehicle technology, such as improvements to fuel efficiency and the better reliability of new trucks, have contributed significantly to the developments made in the operational efficiency of the haulage companies. Also important has been the trend by the operators to develop strategies to improve the efficiency of their assets by, for example, improving vehicle utilisation through better planning of journeys.

Leading companies within the road haulage industry are under pressure from their customers to establish and develop global logistics networks. This demand has led to a spate of acquisitions and mergers among the leading companies, such as the acquisition of Exel PLC, the UK’s leading freight-distribution company, by Germany-based Deutsche Post, and the merger between haulier ACR Logistics and Kuehne + Nagel, another Germany-based logistics operator.

TNT plans UK expansion

TNT NV said it is considering plans to intensify its challenge to the UK”s state-owned postal group Royal Mail as it declined to comment on speculation that it is planning a bid for Deutsche Post AG.

Chief Executive Peter Bakker said TNT is conducting pilot schemes in a number of UK cities to assess the financial viability of setting up “end-to-end” mail networks, which would enable TNT to deliver mail as well as collect and sort it.
Bakker told AFX News in an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos that TNT is conducting experiments in Manchester and Glasgow to assess whether it can generate sufficient mail volumes to make end-to-end networks viable.
Meanwhile, the company refused to comment on speculation that it is interested in German logistics giant Deutsche Post AG.

Shares in the latter outperformed the market on Jan 18 amid the rumours, although one Frankfurt-based trader said he thinks the rumours are unrealistic because TNT is much smaller than Deutsche Post.
Bakker said, meanwhile, that TNT is undertaking a number of initiatives to try to reduce carbon emissions from its planes and trucks.

It is experimenting with biofuel-powered lorries in Amsterdam and with zero-emission electric trucks in the UK.
