Deutsche Post says cartel office ruling on mail ops may lead to revenue loss

Deutsche Post World Net AG said a decision by the German Cartel Office to grant mail consolidators downstream access to its networks could lead to revenue losses in the coming years of no more than the ‘low hundreds of millions’ of euros. ‘In our view, the Postgesetz (German Postal Act) and the scope of the
exclusive license comply’ with EU competition laws, the company said in its
nine-months results report under the heading of ‘risk report’. A company spokeswoman said the revenue losses could amount to a ‘maximum of 150-200 mln eur’.

Dutch Selekt Mail expects to process up to 200 mln packages in 2005

Netherlands-based postal services company Select Mail Nederland, a joint venture of Dutch publishing group Wegener and German postal services company Deutsche Post AG expects to double the number of the processed packages in 2005 to some 200 million pieces, the company’s general director, John Kuiper, said on November 3, 2004. According to the company, 2005 will be the third consecutive year, when Selekt Mail will double the annual number of processed packages. The company succeeded in doubling the processed packages number in 2003, therefore it posted a net profit for that year, Selekt Mail said. Kuiper did not provide a forecast for the company’s financial performance for 2004.

German cartel office says Deutsche Post impeding market competition

The German cartel office said Deutsche Post World Net AG is impeding market competition by offering discounts of 3-21 pct to major companies for mass mail orders, which it does not offer to other mail service providers. The commercial collection, sorting and franking of letters under 100 grams is currently exclusively guaranteed to Deutsche Post under postal laws, which means it is in a position to prevent new competitors from entering the market, and discriminate against existing ones in its pricing policy.

Yamato Transport and DHL Global Mail team up for cross-border mail delivery

DHL Global Mail and Japan’s top door-to-door mail and parcel delivery company, Yamato Transport Co., Ltd. (Yamato) have joined forces to offer an international mail delivery service in Japan to customers world wide. DHL Global Mail, the international mail subsidiary of Deutsche Post World Net, formerly known as Deutsche Post Global Mail has relaunched under the DHL brand in October and runs the world´s largest mail network. Yamato Transport launched its mail service, Kuroneko Mail, nationwide in March 1997. Since then, the service has enjoyed rapid growth servicing major publishers and catalogue companies. Yamato currently delivers 100 million Kuroneko Mail items per month in Japan, in addition to its domestic courier service. The new collaboration will enable DHL Global Mail to offer mail and publication distribution in Japan to their customers worldwide.

Germany dismisses report it might sell Post, Telekom pension receivables

Germany’s finance ministry dismissed as ‘speculation’ a newspaper report that it is considering partly plugging its budget deficit by selling the pension receivables it gets annually from the former state monopolies Deutsche Post World Net AG and Deutsche Telekom. ‘We don’t comment on such speculation,’ a finance ministry spokesman in Berlin said. The report in the Financial Times Deutschland, citing unnamed sources, stated potential buyers could be private investment banks such as Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, as well as the state-development bank Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW). The ministry supervises the pension fund of all civil servants. A huge number of Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom employees retained their status as civil servants even after the entities were transformed into private limited companies prior to their listings.
