Astar asks DOT to toss latest challenge

Astar Air Cargo Inc. urged the Department of Transportation to throw out a request by rivals FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service to review a ruling that found Astar is owned and controlled by U.S. citizens.

In a filing, Miami-based Astar accused FedEx and UPS, which carry nearly 75 percent of U.S. air and ground shipments, of “sour grapes.” Astar said the department” should let the parties compete in the marketplace” and reject moves by FedEx and UPS to reopen the case.

Higher profits for German Deutsche Post

Germany’s Deutsche Post has started the year well and aims to boost profits in 2004, Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel said, adding that the German mail and logistics provider is on plan in the new year.

Zumwinkel said the group would meet its goal of EUR 2.9 billion (USD 3.65 billion) in 2003 pre-tax earnings.

UK Royal Mail shakes up marketing team

UK Royal Mail has restructured its marketing team under marketing director Paul Rich as it prepares for competition from market entrants such as Deutsche Post and TPG.

Rich is aligning his marketing team more closely with Royal Mail’s sales force. Following the review, the marketing of all Royal Mail-branded products will be the responsibility of Rich and his team.
