Deutsche Post asks EU to look into Astar dispute

Deutsche Post has said its asked the European Commission to look into whether U.S. rivals were being given the same treatment in Europe as it was in the U.S., though it has lodged no formal complaint.

A Post DPWGn.DE spokesman said the company had asked EU Commissioner Loyola de Palacio to investigate whether a partnership between U.S. rival UPS and Danish airline Star Air was comparable to that between its own DHL unit and U.S. airline partner Astar.

Europe seeks UPS, Star Air probe

The European Commission has called on Copenhagen to investigate the ties between United Parcel Service and a Danish airline in an attempt to establish whether the US delivery giant has effective control over the carrier – a finding that, if confirmed, could lead the airline to lose its licence.

The Commission’s request was made in a formal letter to the Danish government in late August, and was sparked by a complaint from Deutsche Post, the German postal group and an arch-rival to both UPS and FedEx, another US delivery group.

Deutsche Post steps up US battle with UPS, FedEx

Deutsche Post AG, the German postal giant whose ties with a US carrier is being challenged by its American rivals, has struck back. Chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel said the company had asked European regulators to examine deals between European airlines, and US package-delivery companies FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. that are similar to Deutsche Post’s arrangement with US airline Astar Air Cargo Inc.. FedEx and UPS are vigorously questioning Deutsche Post’s alliance with Astar, prompting the Germans to retaliate.

German Deutsche Post to float Postbank

Deutsche Post has revealed its plans to float its Postbank subsidiary, which it values at around €5 billion, within the next 12 to 18 months. It intends to retain a slight majority of just one share over a 50% stake and to use the €2.5 billion proceeds to reduce its debt and plug gaps in its European postal services and growing global logistics business.

Deutsche Postbank is Germany’s largest retail bank with 10 million customers, 18 million savings accounts and 4.5 million current accounts. It also has around 400,000 corporate customers.

Deutsche Post to co-operate with Post Danmark

Deutsche Post, Germany’s postal service operator, has signed a co-operation agreement with Post Danmark, its Danish counterpart, as part of which the latter will start working for DHL Express, the former’s subsidiary, in Denmark. The German group is also among the future bidders for the 25 per cent stake which the Danish state intends to sell in Post Danmark in the near future. The co-operation agreement is expected to improve Deutsche Post’s chances of being chosen as the buyer of the 25% holding.
