Deutsche Post close to gaining long-term UK licence

Deutsche Post, the German postal operator, is gaining ground in the UK postal market after Postcomm, the industry regulator, said it was considering giving the company a long-term mail licence.

The news added to the troubles of Royal Mail, which is trying to defend its position as the provider of a universal postal service in the face of increasing competition and industrial unrest.

Postcomm has begun a 30-day consultation on whether to issue Deutsche Post with a seven-year licence to offer various business post services, including bulk mail and document exchange. The company already has a short-term licence to offer these services, which will lapse if the long-term licence is given.

Annual UBS Airfreight Survey Released

The annual UBS Airfreight Survey, questioning over 100 of the transportation purchasing managers of the Forbes Fortune 500 companies has been released.
Surprisingly, some 30% of those surveyed already use DHL in some capacity, and a further 29% indicated they were likely to give incremental business to DHLAirborne upon integration.

The conclusion is that a price war is unlikely before 2005, but U.S. price inflation will come to an end. They do not believe DHL will predatory price to gain market as the focus will be initially on integration.

Postcomm has begun a 30-day consultation on Deutsche Post Global Mail UK

Postcomm has begun a 30-day consultation on the proposed issue of a long term licence to Deutsche Post Global Mail (UK) Ltd to provide bulk mail, consolidation and enhanced document exchange services.

Deutsche Post currently holds a short-term interim postal licence for similar services. This will be revoked by consent if a standard licence – which will last a minimum of seven years – is granted. If issued, the new licence will contain a requirement for Deutsche Post to separate its accounts for its UK licensed business and its home market.
