Deutsche Post’s plan to outsource package-delivery services is meeting opposition from German services union ver.di.
Deutsche Post Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel said the mail, parcels, logistics and financial services company might outsource package services in Germany to cut wage costs.

“We want to build up a letter delivery network across the whole of Europe,” by buying up small players in countries where the national companies have a strong market position, Zumwinkel told the daily Die Welt.

A Deutsche Post spokesman said the group had been approached by the German cartel office about the complaints and the company had until the end of March to give a formal reply. The group has about 7,000 private agencies like bakeries or grocery stores that also sell postal products, he said.
BVL, the German association of logistics companies, has warned of the dangers of increased concentration of large state-owned companies on its market. It says that companies such as Deutsche Bahn (DB), the rail operator, and Deutsche Post (DP), the postal operator, are too prone to dividing up the market among themselves. This threatens the existence of the majority of the 9,400 companies operating in the sector.
