Post Office rivals free to seek bulk work

PRIVATE sector and foreign postal organisations will today be free to apply for a long-term licence to deliver bulk mail in the UK, despite efforts by the Post Office to hold on to its monopoly.
The sweeping liberalisation of the postal market begins just days after the postal regulator, Postcomm, bowed to pressure from ministers, cross-party MPs and unions to postpone for a year its original plan to open postal services to full competition from April 2006.
Hays DX, UK Mail, a subsidiary of Business Post, TPG, operator of the Dutch postal service, and Deutsche Post, the German national postal group, yesterday confirmed that they would seek licences to deliver bulk mail from January next year.

Deutsche Post plans €1bn bond issue

Deutsche Post, the German postal and logistics group, plans to raise about €1bn ($920m) through a bond issue, FT Deutschland has learned.
The move, the first ever by the former state monopolist, is aimed at transforming short-term liabilities into longer-term ones. Talks with various investment banks were in an advanced state, but a consortium manager had not yet been appointed. The issue was expected within the next few weeks. Deutsche Post declined to comment over the weekend.

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, has announced that it is to withdraw from its business with digital signatures, declaring at the same time that it was to sell its loss-making subsidiary Signtrust. Deutsche Post said its withdrawal was due to the fact that the market appears to be unready for digital signature technology, meaning that it could not implement its strategy for this area of the business.

Deutsche Post Steps Up Investments in Asia

German postal and logistics giant Deutsche Post AG plans to expand its position in Asia.

Deutsche Post chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel, speaking during a visit to Japan, said that parcel-express service DHL and logistics service provider Danzas will be at the center of these plans. “Asia is, for us, a growth market to which we are paying a great deal of attention,” he said. The group had particularly high expectations of opportunities on the Chinese market, he added.
