DHL wins GBP 9 million contract with UK's leading single-price retailer

DHL Exel Supply Chain today announced that it has won a new three year contract worth GBP 9 million (11.8 million euro), with Poundland, the UK’s largest retailer of GBP 1 products. DHL will be importing consumer products from China and transporting them to stores across the UK, utilizing the expertise from its extensive global network.

DHL will transport a variety of products for Poundland from UK outbases in Billingham, Hatfield and Belshill and will provide deconsolidation center services at ports in Felixstowe and Southampton. The inward freight from China will be managed by DHL’s specialist International Supply Chain team, which provides end-to-end supply chain management expertise.

DHL’s solution will significantly reduce transport costs by the introduction of double-deck trailers and by revising store delivery schedules. DHL’s ability to provide transport outbases and deconsolidation centers in key areas played an important part in securing this contract.

Poundland has 167 stores throughout the UK, each receiving up to five deliveries a week. DHL’s deconsolidation centers will be handling between 3,000 and 4,000 containers each year, transporting a range of products for Poundland covering: food and drink; health, baby and beauty; household; homewares; toys; DIY and petcare products.

DHL signs five-year GBP 150 million contract with MFI (UK)

DHL Exel Supply Chain has today announced a new five-year deal with MFI, the UK’s leading home and furniture retailer, after successfully winning the contract to manage the high street giant’s new distribution center and home delivery operation.

Under the terms of the five-year contract, DHL will invest more than GBP 10 million (13.8 million euro) of its own capital into the venture. This investment will help to improve the information technology system which supports the new, streamlined picking and packing process in the warehouse, and also to develop additional warehouse space as MFI’s product range increases.

On Friday 7 December, DHL and MFI opened a new, major distribution center in Yorkshire, which signifies the start of this new business relationship. Cabinet Office Minister, Ed Miliband, carried out the official opening at the state-of-the-art 750,000 sq m distribution center in Thorne (South Yorkshire), thereby cementing a major breakthrough for DHL, as the deal represents one of the biggest ‘shared risk’ partnerships it has ever entered into with a customer.

DHL Germany and RECARO sign partnership agreement

The partnership marks a new approach to combined modular production and logistics.
DHL Exel Supply Chain and RECARO have signed an agreement concerning the modular manufacturing and logistics of car seats. The logistics expert DHL, part of the Deutsche Post World Net group and Recaro, the manufacturer of premium seat systems for the automotive industry, will enhance their future joint development, procurement, assembly, warehousing and transport of premium car seats. The respective agreement was signed mid-October during the 24th German Logistics Congress in Berlin.

The partnership between both companies marks a new approach to combined modular production and logistics. Under the new business model, RECARO will contribute its core competences in the areas of development, marketing and distribution of car seats, whilst DHL will not just be responsible for all logistical performances but also for the assembly of the seat systems as well as the international coverage using module center sites in the vicinity of the car manufacturers and OEMs. Future customers will benefit from significantly reduced delivery times despite the fact that the product range is large and varied, and will also benefit from low cost structures.

It is planned that, at a later date, further components and systems for the automotive industry are to be provided by the DHL module centers in order to increase the total benefit for car manufacturers. That way, DHL supports a trend, which should enhance the companies’ competitiveness in this highly competitive industry. Manufacturers and suppliers will increasingly be able to focus on their core competencies and to outsource production and logistics processes to experienced service providers. For some time, DHL has specialized in providing assembly services for the automotive industry, including the pre-assembly of door side panels for the Audi A4 and A6.
